ARON - USE YOUR INNER LIGHT (LP/KOMMUN2) These songs were recorded between 1996 and 2001. The result sounds as if it's the second LP in a trilogy, formed together with 'Blackbeacon' (1999) and 'Among The Dead' (2003). This is the folksy transition from the psychedelic hell that is 'Blackbeacon' to the spiritual and death-induced layers of 'Among The Dead'. An acid-folk field trip of loner minded DIY 4-track recordings, the result is haunting, noisy and confrontational. Limited to 300 copies.
WHITE SPIRIT - 21 GRAMS (LP/HIGH ROLLER) This album is respectfully dedicated to the memory of Graeme Crash Crallan (5th June, 1958-27th July, 2008), founder member and drummer of White Spirit. Limited to 250 copies, including 8-page booklet.
BLACKWOLFGOAT - DRONOLITH (LP/KOZMIK ARTIFACT) Blackwolfgoat is the ambient drone project of Daryl Shepard. With just one guitar and one amplifier, Shepard has crafted musical pieces which take the listener to some dark places, and some lighter ones as well. This album, full of great loops and drones, is an ideal pick for fans of f.i. Red Sparowes, Earth and Sunn0))). Limited to 250 hand numbered copies on 180 gram clear vinyl.
DAGORA - MOMENTS FOR MOUNTAINS (2LP/TOZTIZOK ZOUNDZ) An experimental improvised music ensemble from Amsterdam, consisting of two drummers and a man with a suitcase filled with self-built synthboxes and electro-acoustical instruments. Their brand new double LP, 'Moments For Mountains', is an intense trip through fields of cymbals and frenetic drumming, echoed vocals and spacious synth sounds. This combined with guests like Peter van Bergen on sax, Ti Femme and Ernie Mc Cracken on vocals, and Thale on guitar, make for a very special record. Silkscreened art by Manuel Padding. Ltd. 300 copies.
MOONLESS - CALLING ALL DEMONS (LP/DOOMENTIA) Formed in Copenhagen by former members of various punk units, Moonless already shared bills with bands s.a. Church Of Misery, Saint Vitus, Pentagram and Ufomammut. Underneath the Tony Iommi-styled riffing, thunderous drums and fuzzy bass lines, you'll find appealing choruses and catchy hooks that will stick in your cranium for the rest of the month. It's both old school and fresh sounding, slow bone crushin' rock'n'roll. Pure primal testosterone sludge done the right way, the Moonless way.
TECHNICOLOR POETS - ECHOING GREEN (LP/KOMMUN2) On their excellent album 'Echoing Green' the Technicolor Poets delve deep into American '60s acid rock, but with a personal touch and a strong emphasis on the psychedelic experience. No fillers, all killer tracks. Limited edition of 500 copies.
C.O.T.A. - NEW MYTHOLOGIES (CD/SONICK SORCERY) Fresh recorded material in the same vein as the highly acclaimed first two CD's. Expect ritual atavistic music, tribal percussions, atonal tones, ambient drones and repetitive rhythms somewhere between O Yuki Conjugate and Voice Of Eye, but with a much more manic martial undertone.
NO REAL NEED - NONLOCAL MOTIVES (CD/OFF THE HIP) An utterly catchy album of Guided By Voices and Beatles inspired lo-fi bedroom recordings. No Real Dead is a band formed and led by one Steve Hewitt, co-featuring his brothers Mark and Adam, and Leon Cranswick.
CRYSTAL THOMAS & THE FLOWERS OF EVIL - A CHANGE IN HELL (CD/OFF THE HIP) Crystal's sophomore album, written, recorded, and co-produced with Spencer P Jones and Matt Walker, captures Crystals 'Australian-gothic', confessional lyrics over a dark disco pulse and rock'n'roll swagger, raw against the lush production of the previous s/t offering from 2008.
SPIDS NOGENHAT - DE SIDSTE HER PA JORDEN (LP/ORPHEUS RECORDS) In 2001 Spids Nogenhat recorded their (now) highly regarded album 'En Maerkelig Kop Te' and then split up to do other things. Aramis became Lorenzo Woodrose and started a worldwide garage-psych crusade with Baby Woodrose. Aron made solo records as (simply) Aron and played with Aron And The Blackbeacon Orkestra, and Hobitten played in On Trial. In 2008 they got back together for a string of live shows, including an appearance at the Roskilde festival. This album features magical live recordings from that period.
SPIDS NOGENHAT - EN MARKELIG KOP TE (LP/ORPHEUS RECORDS) Back in print, the classic 2001 album by Danish psych heads Spids Nogenhat.
UFOMAMMUT - ORO (LP/SUPERNATURALCAT) The latest work by Italy's psychedelic heavy rock alchemists Ufomammut. This is the first in a series of two releases, the latter expected in September. 'Oro' is dedicated to, based upon, and inspired by, "the power of knowledge". Five impressive tracks that won't disappoint the band's many fans!
INCOMING CEREBRAL OVERDRIVE - LE STELLE: A VOJAGE ADRIFT (LP-CD/SUPERNATURALCAT) Heavy cavernous guitars with back-breaking riffs, multi-faceted, effect laden vocals and rhythmic notes plunge into a psychedelic mix of unpredictable sounds of distress and madness. Another exciting chapter in the history of this powerful Italian outfit. Includes the participation of Urlo and Poia of Ufomammut.
EXISTANCE - EXISTANCE (LP-CD/HIGH ROLLER) A superb metal band from Clermont in France. The group's founder, guitarist and vocalist Julian Izard, is the son of Didier Izard, who played with French metal legends H-Bomb. On CD and vinyl, black as well as silver and red. All vinyl editions are very limited. Comes with heavy cardboard cover and insert with lyrics.
METALMORFOSIS - THROUGH SPACE AND TIME (LP/HIGH ROLLER) A merciless metal band, featuring the talents of Nick Banger, Peter Krieg, Anthi Redpassion and John Skullblaster. Limited editions on both black and white vinyl, including gatefold sleeve.
STEEL ASSASSIN - WW II: METAL OF HONOR (LP/HIGH ROLLER) Steel Assassin's latest studio effort is an intriguing concept album dedicated to WWII. Comes in gatefold sleeve, including lyrics.
SLEEPY HOLLOW - SKULL 13 (LP/HIGH ROLLER) A brand new album from Sleepy Hollow, formed back in 1989 by vocalist Bob Mitchell with guitarist Steve Stegg, bassist Steve Brink and drummer Tommy Wassman. This classic band, known and admired for combining elements of power and doom metal, is enjoying renewed popularity in the new millennium. Available on black and clear vinyl. (Limited editions.) Includes cardboard lyric sheet.
STEREOPHONIC SPACE SOUND UNLIMITED - PLAYS LOST TV THEMES (LP/DIONYSUS) Reissue on vinyl of the debut album from this respected Swiss electronica duo, originally issued in 1997. Highly recommended to fans of retro sound(track)s, surf, spy-fi and electronic pioneers.
VARIOUS - BURG HERZBERG: AT THE FESTIVAL (CD/HERZBERG VERLAG) A great set of recordings from the annual Burg Herzberg Festival, going strong since 1968. Features recordings of Eloy, Hidria Spacefolk, Freakcity Band, Vibravoid, Straßenjungs, a.o.
UMBERTO - WELCOME TO THE CHILLZONE (12"/GREAT POP SUPPLEMENT) From Kansas City, Umberto is the killer solo project from Matt Hill. 'Welcome To The Chillzone', as its title implies, is a somewhat stripped down, eerily ambient, chillingly icy, late night listen, recalling a.o. John Carpenter, Klaus Schulze and at times, Popol Vuh.
60’s & 70’s & 80’s (RE-)RELEASES AND ARTISTS + OTHER OLDIES
CLOVEN HOOF - A SULTAN'S RANDOM (CD-LP+DVD/HIGH ROLLER) A splendid reissue (incl. DVD) of a NWOBHM-album, originally released in 1989 by FM Revolver Records. An overlooked classic! The LP-edition comes with thick cardboard sleeve and 8-page booklet.
CREATURES OF THE GOLDEN DAWN - DARK WAS THE NIGHT, COLD WAS THE GROUND (LP/DIONYSUS) LP with free digital download. Arriving after the '80s garage/psych revival, Bethlehem's The Creatures Of The Golden Dawn came on the '90s scene with a lot more attitude than did earlier similar-minded combos. Lead by vocalist Mark Smith, their knife-sharp punky garage-meets-the-early-days-of-psychedelia tunes were filled with hooky riffs and always shadowed by varying degrees of darkness. The Creatures amassed a cult following in the states and Europe, and were played heavily on Little Steven's Underground Garage syndicated radio show.
BOYD RIVERS - YOU CAN'T MAKE ME DOUBT (LP/MISSISSIPPI-CHANGE) First full length album by one of the greatest gospel musicians of all time! Boyd Rivers was an amazing but, unfortunately, little known gospel artist. Comparisons could be made to Charlie Jackson, but in the end not too many people sound anything like Rivers. Side one features Boyd playing stunning electric guitar and belting out six incredibly heavy songs. Side two finds Boyd playing acoustic guitar, a bit mellower but still impassioned. All the material on this album has never been released, with the exception of 'Fire In My Bones', which was the title track of the Case Quarter 3CD gospel compilation. Includes liner notes by Amos Harvey and old school 'tip on' cover.
WILDWOOD - PLASTIC PEOPLE (2CD/FRANTIC) This hard rocking psychedelic quartet from late '60s California played some of the toughest, most malevolent music around at the time, and their spectacular legacy is celebrated upon this deluxe double CD anthology. Featuring the soulful vocals of bass player Frank Colli, the Wildwood sound is reminiscent of acts as varied as The Doors, Music Machine and Steppenwolf, but with a powerful, unique backbone that is very much their own. Includes 12-page colour booklet, loaded with eye-popping visuals.
VARIOUS - REMOLINO DE ORO (LP/DOMINO SOUND) 'Coastal Cumbias From Colombia's Discos Fuentes 1961-73'. A follow up to 'A Orillas Del Magdalena', here are twelve more cumbias from Colombia's most prolific label. From dance floor hit to nostalgic ode, they come straight from the heart.
VARIOUS - WEDDING SONGS (LP/DOMINO SOUND)Originally released on Philips Ethiopia in 1973, this seemingly impossible to find LP is available once again to the lucky humans of the world. With a mix of modern and traditional instruments, these fourteen songs go through the progression of an Ethiopian Amhara wedding, sung in Amharic. With a trio of singers alternating turns at the microphone and sharing call and response duties, a relentless frenzy of hand clapping incites dancing and smiles. This is a co-release with Mitmitta Musika of Addis Abeba, Ethiopia. Great stuff!
DEAD MOON - TOO MANY PEOPLE (7"/MISSISSIPPI/CHANGE) An awesome EP, offering four Dead Moon songs from 1989, two of which previously unissued and two only available on the hard as hell to find European compilation '13 Off My Hook'. Enjoy!
APOSTLES - ONYE AKPA/OSHI ONWU (7"/ACADEMY-VOODOO FUNK) This is a fantastic two-sider of deep-n-dirty early 70's Afro-funk (from Nigeria) that has few peers. This is a truly deluxe release, fully licensed from the band, painstakingly remastered, pressed with UK style punch-out centre and housed in a beautiful custom picture sleeve. Limited to 1500 copies. Possibly the most deeply funky Record Store Day release ever!

NORTON RECORDS has announced a couple of mighty interesting titles, due for release in April. 'Sinner Man' is a vinyl collection of '66 recordings from ESQUERITA, featuring 10 unissued slices of piano pounding rock'n'roll. From the same artist comes the single 'Hittin' On' b/w 'Letter Full Of Tears', offering wild interpretations of songs originally recorded by Irma Thomas and Gladys Knight. Also scheduled for April are a repress of HASIL ATKINS' mega cool album 'Out To Hunch', and 'The Raging Sea' b/w 'Gangwar', a double 1959 blaster on 7" by GENE MALTAIS.

YAIR YONA - WORLD BEHIND CURTAINS (CD/STRANGE ATTRACTORS AUDIO HOUSE) reviewed by Gowaart Van Den Bossche for Goddeau (translated excerpt) The diverse arrangements and semi-unexpected, but never unpleasant, changes in sound are the main strength of 'World Behind Curtains'.
AICAN - ART SAVES/KILLS (CD/R.A.I.G.) reviewed by Patrick Bruneel for Gonzo Circus (translated excerpt) Their music is as much postrock as prog of the arty kind...
DANS DANS - FREEDOM SUITE (LP/BESTOV) reviewed by Willem Jongeneelen for Oor (translated excerpt) The musicians add a jazzy touch, but blues, rock and psychedelia also are close by.
