the Spot Light #351

d.d. Tuesday, May 29th, 2012

DERNIERE VOLONTE - MON MEILLEUR ENNEMI (LP+7"/HAU RUCK!)  After two years of silence Geoffroy returns with 12 new songs. Inspired by is own introspection, to fight and love his best enemy. Some songs are taken from French poetry (Verlaine, Theophile Gauthier...), while the sound is a mixture of 'Devant Le Miroir' and 'Immortel' in a powerful way. The vinyl version comes in a deluxe foldout cover and is limited to 600 copies, including a bonus 7" with an additional track.

MEN OF NORTH COUNTRY - MIRROR MAN (7"/ACID JAZZ)  Men Of North Country emerged from Tel Aviv's thriving soul scene, bringing with them a fresh approach to creating the perfect three-minute soul nugget. This single offers a re-invention of the well known hit single The Human League. Yes, this sounds like 1982 Sheffield chic meeting polished 2012 cool. Released with the equally catchy flip-side 'The North', 'Mirror Man' is the first single from the band's debut album.

NOSTALGIE ETERNELLE - TWEE KEERLKES KWAMM VAN LEER/OSTFREESLAND (2CD/INFRASTITION)  A selection of tracks by this German DIY-duo, previously released on a variety of cassettes since the early '80s. The music is an adventurous mixture of electronic and industrial experiments, German Neue Welle and dark '80s post-punk. CD number one is dedicated to their home-town of Leer, the second disc to the German city of Mainz.

TROP TARD - ILS ÉTAIENT 9 DANS L'OBSCURITÉ (CD/INFRASTITION)  This relevant release of French Cold Wave features all the tracks from Trop Tard's sole LP, plus their much rumoured self released debut cassette. Recommended to fans of the ground breaking French '80s underground, Psychic TV, and everything in between.

VARIOUS - EVERY DAY IN THE WEEK, VOL. 1 (LP/HIDDEN CHARMS)  First release from Dutch label Hidden Charms. This LP merely brings together a bunch of damn fine jazz and blues recordings that make for a musically diverse, entertaining and interesting listening experience. Here are 14 superb songs recorded between 1927-1933, featuring the cream of the crop of Barrelhouse piano, country blues, jug bands, hokum groups, hot jazz orchestra's and medicine show songsters. All recordings are culled from original and rare 78rpm records. The tracklist includes contributions from delightful obscurities s.a. Harum Scarums, Bumble Bee Slim, Tampa Red's Hokum Jug Band, Bobby Leecan's Need-More Band, Pink Anderson & Simmie Dooley, Henry Brown, a.m.o. Includes a 12-page booklet with liner notes by Alex van der Tuuk, who did some special research and found interesting new facts. A must for followers of labels like Mississippi Records!

BLML - GIFT (HAPPY CRASHER)  Debut album from an energetic Greek band featuring George Karanikolas, lead guitarist of garage-punkers The Last Drive. BLML offers a set of raging post-psych sounds and dark instrumental themes, with wild guitar riffs, Hammond, violin, piano, and a solid rhythm section. Limited edition of 250 copies on 180 grams gold coloured vinyl.

ARC (CANADA) - SOMEWHERE THERE (LP/BETA-LACTAM RING)  Tribal guitar drone ambient with psychedelic and post-rock elements. The trio of Aidan Baker, Christopher Kukiel, and Richard Baker return to the quiet with hushed tribal timbres. However, these ambiences are riveting in a way that other ambiences are not, probably because the group doesn't think within an ambient framework. There really are no comparisons, except for maybe sneezing, which is Merzbow's department. One time vinyl edition of 400 copies (180 gram vinyl), packaged in custom made book bound sleeves.

LOST RIVERS - SIN AND LOSTNESS (LP/NORTHERN STAR)  The debut album by a noise infused three piece from Germany. Though often  compared to Spacemen 3, Loop and Brian Jonestown Massacre, Lost Rivers' sound and style have some distinct characteristics of their own. Check 'em out!

SAD HORSE - PURPLE ON PURPLE MAKES PURPLE (LP/WATER WING)  Sad Horse features the talents of Elizabeth Venable and Geoff Soule, founder of US indie-poppers Fuck (Matador Records a.o.). This is their debut full length, featuring two voices, a guitar and a drum kit. Fourteen strange, simple and catchy popsongs that play at 45rpm.

BRITON RITES - FOR MIRCALLA (2LP/HIGH ROLLER)  Double vinyl edition of their debut long player. This American band will appeal to fans of doom as well as vintage British heavy metal. Cool! Available in limited black and coloured editions, with heavy gatefold cover.

ALTIERI/BALESTRAZZI/BECUZZI - IN MEMORIAM J.G. BALLARD (CD/OLD EUROPA CAFE)  Dedicated to the memory of writer J.G. Ballard, this is an album of top notch industrial sounds from Italy.

NAEVUS - SOIL (CD/OLD EUROPA CAFE)  Here's the long overdue re-release for this seminal Naevus album, originally released 2001. 'Soil' was the album that consolidated the eclectic approach of its predecessor 'Truffles Of Love'. Here neo-folk and new-wave are combined, resulting in the most pessimistic and sinister work to be found in the Naevus catalogue. Includes the original version of the longstanding live fave 'No, Remember' and cover versions of songs by Laibach and Kirlian Camera. Persented in digipack, with 12-page booklet featuring the lyrics.

BLACK SUN PRODUCTIONS WITH MIKAEL KARLSSON - PHANTASMATA DOMESTICA (CD/OLD EUROPA CAFE)  The final studio album from Black Sun Productions is a collaboration with American classic composer Mikael Karlsson. 'Phantasmata Domestica' is a work of wonderful contemporary "classic music" with violins, viola cello and piano. Lovely.

O PARADIS - PERSONAS (CD/OLD EUROPA CAFE)  A new album by the Catalonian artist, a wonderful blend of electronic pop and romantic psychedelia. Each song is an experience. Comes is in a beautiful 6-panel digipack.

CAPRICE - GIRDENWODAN (CD/PRIKOSNOVENIE)  With 'Girdenwodan' Caprice return to their beloved world of fairies. The backbone of this music is the harp, playing even patterns, and the short accented bass, indicating the rhythm and harmonies. Faerie equivalents of flutes, oboes, clarinets, bassoons, violins and cellos are used as solo instruments. Join the dance of elves, pixies, goblins and mischievous fairies! The digipack and booklet are wonderfully illustrated by British artist Marc Potts.

PLANET OF ZEUS - ELEVEN THE HARD WAY (CD/B-OTHERSIDE)  A new edition of the highly regarded debut album (2008) by the Greek stoner titans.

SHIT AND SHINE - LE GRAND LARANCE PRIX (CD/RIOT SEASON)  The first release in a new series of CD releases, all limited to 250 copies in hand cut and printed card wallet sleeves. The material on this CD was originally released in 2012 as a 3LP set on the Rock Is Hell label. A moody mish-mash of ambient, krautrock and electronic music.

DAMIEN -  MEMORANDUM (2LP/TO THE DEATH)  Wow!!! All the known recordings from this '80s cult thrash metal band from Sweden, collected on an awesome double LP. Available on black and splatter vinyl, in gatefold sleeve with booklet. Limited editions.

MARCUS - MARCUS: ORIGINAL LP + OUTTAKES (2CD/LION PRODUCTION)  Rusty Evans is mainly known for his seriously  psychedelic bands/projects The Deep and The Freak Scene. After the release of the Freak Scene LP ('Psychedelic Psoul'), Rusty moved from NYC to SF, reclaimed his birth name of Marcus, and cut this mellow psych album for Kinetic Records. 1969's 'Marcus' LP is a collection of dreamy psychedelic tunes, somewhere between the hippie-folk of Donovan and Tim Hardin, and the richly orchestrated sounds of Gary Usher and Curt Boettcher's legendary first Sagittarius-album. Apart from the original album-songs, this double-CD features a shipload of alternate takes and acoustic demo's. An essential release for all fans of psychedelic guru Rusty Evans.

MISSING VINYL RECORDS are about to reissue two legendary albums by Greek psychedelic heroes APHRODITE'S CHILD, '666' (as a 2LP set) and END OF THE WORLD (also on LP) . Both titles are pressed on 180 gram vinyl and come with reproduced artwork and labels. At the same time Missing Vinyl will re-release two albums (originally self released) by Germany's highly rated mid '70s folk-band GURNEMANZ ('No Rays Of Noise' and 'Spielmannskinder'). Recommended to fans of Ougenweide, Emma Myldenberger, Lang'syne, etc.

VINYL ON DEMAND are about to extend their catalogue with an impressive string of reissues. Scheduled are releases of CRASH COURSE IN SCIENCE (2LP + 7"), KLUSTER (8LP set, recorded '69-'72), KONRAD SCHNITZLER (8LP set 'Container'), SEMA (4LP), YEARS ON EARTH (2LP), EXPERIMENTAL PRODUCTS (two different 2CD-sets), NO MORE (2CD), and a retrospective compilation (5CD set) dedicated to the BROKEN FLAG label.

ARC OF ASCENT - THE HIGHER KEY (CD-LP/ASTRAL PROJECTI)  reviewed by Cosmicmasseur for ConcreteWeb (excerpt)  All the normal effects of space stoner are present in spades, heavy wah wah laden guitar work mixing in with chugging booming bass lines, all powered from behind by thunderous doom laden drums.

ROY & THE DEVIL'S MOTORCYCLE - FORGOTTEN MILLION SELLERS (CD-LP/VOODOO RHYTHM)  reviewed by Patrick Bruneel for Gonzo Circus (translated excerpt)  More trashy than this is hardly possible...

ROY & THE DEVIL'S MOTORCYCLE - TELL IT TO THE PEOPLE (CD-LP/VOODOO RHYTHM)  reviewed by Patrick Bruneel for Gonzo Circus (translated excerpt)  The punk has made way for even more blues, while the psychedelia is mixed in a more conventional way, more or less comparable to Sonic Boom's solo work, or Spacemen 3.

OUTSIDERS - CQ-MYTHOLOGY (2LP/PSEUDONYM)  reviewed by Lenny Helsing for Ugly Things (excerpt)  A keen sense of mystery and suspense is prevalent throughout...

BIG BOY PETE - COLD TURKEY (CD/GEARFAB)  reviewed by Joost Jan Meertens for Planet Trash (translated excerpt)  For those into sixties psychedelia and strange sound effects there's plenty to enjoy...

HILLOW HAMMET - HAMMER (CD/GEARFAB)  reviewed by Aaron Milenski for Ugly Things (excerpt)  ...originally self released and, deservedly, highly rated by a lot of collectors.

UNITED TRAVEL SERVICE - WIND AND STONE (LP-CD/BREAK-A-WAY)  reviewed by Mike Stax for Ugly Things (excerpt)  Not only is the music first rate, it's splendidly packaged...

IMPALA SYNDROME - IMPALA SYNDROME (CD/GEARFAB)  reviewed by Cosmicmassuer for ConcreteWeb (excerpt)  Wow, what a great discovery! excellent and varied album where psychedelic, bluesy and soulful passages flow into each other, effortlessly it seems. Great album.
