After 3 chapters of PSYCHEDELIC BATLLES, VE Recordings is really proud to present the 4th volume: this time the fighting is between the American psych band THE LUCK OF EDEN HALL and the Italian kraut-psych outfit RED SUN! The project led by Gregory Curvey plays 23 minutes of psychedelic vibes (one only song named "Make Way For The Mighty Machines"), while RED SUN (headliner during most recent KOZFEST) offer a mixture heavy-psych songs. PURPLE HILL WITCH - CELESTIAL CEMETERY (LP/CHURCH WITHIN)

With their sophomore album Norwegians Purple Hill Witch hit a sweet spot in the metal triangle between Angel Witch, Black Sabbath and Hawkwind. It's that alchemistic place where psych, doom, NWOBHM, proto metal and rock are molded and sculpted into a perfect entity. Whereas the debut album had more of a stoner rock vibe to it, this record takes the listener on a sheer proto doom journey past vast galaxies of swirling, Iommic riffs, blistering soli, driving drums and a steady surge of pulsating bass.

BLUES/COUNTRY/OLDIES

GOON MAT & LORD BENARDO - TAKE OFF YOUR CLOTHES (CD/VOODOO RHYTHM)

JAZZ/AVANTGARDE

MOPO - TÖKKÖ/NÄÄSPOSSU (7"/WE JAZZ)

Mopo, a trio of sax, bass and drums from Finland, has been on the radar of international tastemakers already for a while, thanks to its unique blend of punk, jazz and inspiration from Finnish nature. The 'Tökkö'/'Nääspossu' 7-inch is an acoustic jazz/heavy metal juggernaut, which fittingly captures the explosive live energy of Mopo.

REGGAE/DUB/SKA/ROCKSTEADY

BROWN, DENNIS/CASSANOVA/JUNIOR BRAMMER/AL CAMPBELL/BUNK I - IN THE MOOD FOR LOVE/BAD BWOY A COME/... (12"/JAH FINGERS)

...JOHNNY GET UP/NO TIME TO WASTE' - Despite the rugged grooves of the fierce rhythm, the great Dennis Brown comes over all romantic on 'In The Mood For Love', which comes in stark contrast to what is to follow, yet sounds no less impactful for it. Dancehall singer Cassanova, who was just making his first singles around the time of this recording in 1993, shifts the focus to the perils of ghetto violence on 'Bad Bwoy A Come', while in duet form, Junior Brammer and Al Campbell offer the anti-loafing advice of 'Johnny Get Up', the sentiment furthered by deejay Bunk I on 'No Time To Waste'. Brought to London in 24-track form by Jah Fingers, it was edited and mixed by Petah Sunday, and mastered in Berlin by Daniele Antezza. Another piece of the puzzle that would otherwise have languished in the dust! Also contains two dub versions.

GAD, PABLO - THE BEST OF PABLO GAD (LP/REGGAE ON TOP)

Included are two cuts that set modern boogie funk fans alight when they leaked out online. 'Lei Do Amor', with a sophisticated slinky groove, brings to mind a Brazilian Kashif, while Donato's talkbox feature 'Surreal' nods appealingly to Herbie Hancock's classic 'I Thought It Was You'.

KRAJENSKI, LUTZ - PLAYS HITS AGOGO (7"/AGOGO)

For Agogo Records' 10 year anniversary, jazz arranger and keyboarder Lutz Krajenski re-interpreted two songs from the label's back catalogue. 'I Got Hope' was originally written and recorded by The Hi-Fly Orchestra and 'Cold, Cold People' is a cover version of Timmy Thomas' classic tune.

SCRIMSHIRE - SPOOKTOBER EDITS (7"/DUBPLATE)

This series continues with Scrimshire bringing us a frighteningly funky pair of edits, released for the first time on vinyl, well in time for Halloween. 'Lalomie's Strangeness' finds the master of the chop shop slicing and dicing a particularly freaky serving of soul with some rather devilish vocals to boot. 'Ray's Superstitions' takes one of the finest, and more obscure, versions of this fright night favourite and gives it a petrifying percussive workout complete with monstrous Moogs a-go-go!

STARCHILD JR. - HAND ME DOWN DIAPERS (CD/EVERLAND)

Starchild Jr. is Garrett Shider, the son of legendary Parliament/Funkadelic guitarist Garry Shider. This explosive, funky album isn't only a tribute from son to father, it's also an extension of the P-Funk Allstars (the next generation, so to speak). NIGHT MARKS - EXPERIENCE (LP/U KNOW ME)

Night Marks comprises two exceptional musicians, namely Marek Pedziwiatr and Piotrek Skorupski. These two gentlemen are connected by their mutual love of jazz, soul and hip-hop, and as if that wasn't enough, they're also both electronic virtuosos. This melting pot of commonalities spawned Night Marks' unique sound, featuring tasteful samples, bass and keyboard wizardry, and remarkable lyrics. The duo's first full-length is limited to 260 copies on vinyl.

GARTRELL, DELIA - I MUST BE DOING SOMETHING RIGHT (7"/ROCAFORT)

Another 1960s soul gem, unearthed and held up to the light. The mid-tempo stomper 'I Must Be Doing Something Right' is an irresistible sassy classic, originally the B-Side of the single 'If You Got What It Takes (They Can't Take What You Got)' which was released on Maverick Records. 'Fight Fire With Fire' boasts a similar production style, but this time with a prominent electric guitar riff, emotive strings and heavenly backing vocals. A must for all 7-inch soul collectors.

The Bayan Mongol Variety Group existed from the early '70s to the late '80s. After the collapse of the USSR, the ensemble began to experience serious difficulties with funding and booking concerts, and finally disintegrated, after which the participants lost contact with each other. Fortunately, thanks to efforts from the fans, some old contacts were reestablished, key records and sound sources were dug up, and now this historical record is released again. File under funk, jazz rock, prog rock, or psychedelic rock.

ELECTRONIC MUSIC/AMBIENT/D’N’B/TRIPHOP

GLASS, MARTIN - THE PACIFIC VISIONS OF MARTIN GLASS (LP/KIT)

This first set of recordings of Martin Glass is an ode to Pacific bubble decadence, beamed from a lilo or a roof garden (or both)... all fizzing arpeggios, melancholy marimba symphonies and sunken yacht karaoke. In terms of sonic references, think forgotten '70s Nippon pop, Sakomoto + Glass sweeping neo-classicism, Haruomi Hosono driftwood, Susumu Yokota floral pretty-ness... It's all there, somewhere...

DANCE/TECHNO/HOUSE/HIPHOP

CYNE - TIME BEING (DELUXE EDITION) (3LP) (LP/PROJECT MOONCIR)

AFRO-BEAT/FUNK & PSYCH/DESERT BLUES/ETHIOPIQUES

APOSTLES (NIGERIA) - BANKO WOMAN (LP/PMG)

Heaven sent from Nigeria's tumultuous east, The Apostles have been preaching a particular blend of funky psychedelic soul/rock fusion for over forty years. On 1977's 'Banko Woman', here reissued on vinyl, the group threw a little Afrobeat into the mix, creating an Afro-funk disco bomb that has been energizing dance floors ever since.

BURNIS - LIGHT MY FIRE (LP/PMG)

Produced by former Funkees-member Jake Sollo and backed by a hot team of session musicians including Friday Pozo, Nkono Teles and Joseph 'Jojo' Kuo, on this LP Burnis delivered a slab of slick Afro disco boogie for the ages. The LP was originally released in 1983 by Delix Records, now it makes its return to vinyl.

MOKS, JOE - BOYS AND GIRLS (LP/PMG)

Spotted by EMI Nigeria's legendary producer Odion Iruoje, and nurtured by his protege Alex Tony Okoroji, Joe Moks (a.k.a. Josephine Mokwunyei) pioneered a wonky, hi-tech style of funk that would become the sound of '80s Nigeria. Her 1979 album 'Boys And Girls' is brash, bouncy and fun, decorated by scatty synth lines and propelled by the magic hand claps of Nigerian rhythm legends Steve Black, Goddy Igidigi and Ifi Okwechime. This is a fine reissue on vinyl.
