PSYCHEDELIC/PROGRESSIVE/FOLK

DUO EMILIA LAJUNEN & SUVI OSKALA - PIILOKISA (CD/NORDIC NOTES)

Emilia Lajunen and Suvo Oskala about their album 'Piilokisa' ('Hidden Frolic'): "Making this album, we wanted the joy of playing music, communication through playing, and living in the moment to be heard - these are all things that give duo playing its power. What we also find joyfully powerful is the chiming of ten strings that runs from 'Waltz Of The Drowned'/'Lost All The Way' to 'From The Deceased'. Our arrangements of the traditional Finnish folk tunes and the three amazing new pieces composed for us are where melodies come out to play - a Hidden Frolic."

OKRA PLAYGROUND - ÄÄNENI YLI VESIEN (CD/NORDIC NOTES)

Second album by Helsinki based electro-folk band Okra Playground. They were originally formed in 2010 from a shared wish to bring together excellent people and musicians to play around traditional Finnish music with a fresh approach. The band became almost literally a musical playground for its musicians. On this playground the kantele and bowed lyre, both ancient folk instruments, coexist in a new, exciting symbiosis with modern instruments and soundscapes. The music resulting from the quite unusual interesting combination has roots deep in the Finnish soil, but its tallest branches spread out towards the furthest shores of world music. The strong voices of the three female singers, as well as the age-old lyrics, simultaneously take the listener to far-off places and close to home.

VARIOUS - BROWN ACID: THE SIXTH TRIP (BLACK) (LP/RIDING EASY)

'HEAVY ROCK FROM THE UNDERGROUND COMEDOWN' - For the sixth lysergic journey, Riding Easy Records and Permanent Records have assembled 11 heavy slabs of obscure psychedelic rock/proto metal again. And as usual, the tracks from these impossibly rare records have all been fully cleared through the artists themselves. TRACKS: 01. Gold - No Parking 02. Heat Exchange - Inferno 03. Travis - Lovin' You 04. Enoch Smoky - It's Cruel 05. Backwood Memory - Give Me Time 06. Flight - Luvin', Huggin' & More 07. Truth & Janey - Midnight Horsemen 08. West Minst'r - My Life 09. Purgatory - Polar Expedition 10. Johnny Barnes - Steele Rail Blues 11. Zendik - Is There No Peace

LITTLE BOY BLUES - IN THE WOODLAND OF WEIR (GERMANY) (CD/EARLY DAWN)

Classic '60 US garage-psych, reissued on CD with bonus tracks.

PACIFIC OCEAN - PACIFIC OCEAN (CD/EARLY DAWN)

A hard hitting rock album from 1968, with a soulful drive, reissued on CD!

AUGUSTINE AZUL - LOMBRAMORFOSE (LP/MORE FUZZ)

On their debut album, the Brazilian psychedelic trio Augustine Azul craft a unique blend of instrumental fuzziness, insane grooves and prog-ish/bluesy vibes, that will be stuck in your head from the first note! Influenced by Radio Moscow, Earthless, The Atomic Bitchwax and Captain Beyond.

DECASIA - THE LORD IS GONE (LP/MORE FUZZ)

Get ready to experience some deep heavy psych sounds from France, alternating between powerful fuzzy riffage and softer melodic guitar parts with unique vocals. If you're familiar with fuzzy ripping distortions, cosmic lunar reverbs, underground crypt bass sounds and gigantic LSD elephant style drumming barrels, you'll be served! To give you an even more precise idea, Decasia sounds like the child of Elder and Colour Haze.

LAKE RUTH - BIRDS OF AMERICA (LP/FERAL CHILD)

The hugely anticipated second full length from Lake Ruth. Inspired by 1960's sonic experimentation, baroque psychedelia, library obscurities, vintage pop noir, Giallo soundtracks, kraut and jazz, Lake Ruth creates intriguing and unique music rich with multilayered instrumentation, propulsive rhythms and atmospheric vocals. "Explores all manner of '60s baroque psychedelia, full of chiming guitars, harpsichord, a wide array of organs and synthesizers, and dips into krautrock and other studies...gorgeous and bewitching." ~Brooklyn Vegan.

LEAFY - LEAFY (LP/MORE FUZZ)

Debut album by Leafy from Norway. They have a strong classic stoner rock sound with burning riffs that will hook you in instantly! Prepare for strong vocals combined with an avalanche of fuzzy riffage a la early Truckfighters, Lowrider, Dozer or Steak.

LOVE MACHINE (GERMANY) - TIMES TO COME (LP/UNIQUE)

Third album by Düsseldorf-based Love Machine. Folk rock and rock'n'roll influences connect with contemporary psychedelia; harmonic vocals and slide guitars meet up with analog synthesizers and voodoo percussion. All these parts melt to a sweaty, mind-opening cocktail of Americana and krautrock.

ON TRIAL - (BLACK) SEVENTY KILOMETERS OF... (+7") (LP/SPACE ROCK)

...UNDERWATER NOTHINGNESS, KAPTAIN!' - On Trial were the premier Danish psych band and one of the few that toured internationally in the '90s and 2000s before disbanding in 2011. The band was the roots for a number of amazing bands that followed On Trial (some during but mostly after), like Spids Nogenhat, Aron, Ghost Rocket, Black Pussy, Black Seagull, Kama Loka, Dragontears, Quiet Spring, Baby Woodrose and others). 'S.K.U.N.K.' was recorded to a 4 tracks cassette and released by the band themselves on CD. This was a period when the band was heavily into Monster Magnet, and psych rock in general as well as getting stoned a lot. You can say this album was the band's answer to 'Spine Of God' by Monster Magnet. This is the first time it appears on vinyl. Limited to 174 copies on black vinyl.

SAÅAD - PRÉSENCE ABSTENTE (LP/HANDS IN THE DA)

Based on the French duo's 2017 live setup and improvised sets, this album is the quintessence of their music: raw, deep, murky, fascinating. The band's sound and experimental songwriting have matured over the course of their albums, and with this offering they have truly blossomed both in form and in content. Their brand of experimental drone takes on a new, distinct shape and, in the space of 38 musical minutes, sends out a message in a bottle to our western world, a foreboding message of the communication breakdown and the effacement of our personal identities that we find ourselves living through as a generation. But it is also an ode to nature with tones of hope, a desire to share and to return to basics, before it's too late. It all makes for an arresting listening experience.

STONE OAK COSMONAUT - THE LAST MACHINE (2CD) (CD/SELF RELEASE)

Stone Oak Cosmonaut's 2018 double album contains great heavy stoner rock songs and long epic journeys way deep into the multiverse. The band sounds fresh and dynamic and very heavy. Spacey sounds galore. We guess they grew up on a mixture of Black Sabbath, Hawkwind, Motörhead and epic Rush, with some Kyuss and Monomyth thrown in. Fiery drums, monster bass, heavy guitar riffs and freaky old school guitar storytelling in a cosmic movie setting. Star Trek on acid meets Ennio Morricone on a motorbike.

VESPERO - SHUM-SHIR (CD/VMS)

'Shum-Shir' is the second part of 'Abyssinian Tales'. Fully instrumental psych/krautrock with ethno ifluences. Mixed and mastered by Alexander Kuzovlev. Includes 4 bonus tracks.

VIBRAVOID - PICTURES AT THE MIND MUSEUM (2CD) (CD/CLOSTRIDIUM)

A double-CD reissue of the phenomal and sold out TRIPLE-LP album 'A Night At The Museum' from 2017. The CD version contains, apart from the full performance at the Düsseldorf Film Museum, four unreleased recordings from the "MIZ Session" from early 2017. The CD has been remixed and remastered to bring out the best digital audio results.

GARAGE/BEAT/SURF/ROCK’N’ROLL

VARIOUS - THE VIP VOP TAPES, VOL. 3 (LP/MMR)

Volume three in the 'Vip Vop Tapes', legendary compilations put together by Lux Interior himself. Lux compiled these tapes to be played before The Cramps would take to the stage, mixing obscure and rare rockabilly, doo wop, surf and just plain weird tracks with crazed voice overs and excerpts from B-movies and worse! Should be considered as complimentary to the 'Born Bad', 'Songs The Cramps Taught Us', 'Purple Knif Show' and 'Forbidden City Dog Food' albums. SAM THE SHAM & THE PHARAOHS - WOOLY BULLY: ORIGINAL 1965 DEBUT ALBUM! (CD/EARLY DAWN)

The band's legendary 1965 debut-album, reissued on CD with three bonus tracks.

WRONG SOCIETY - TELL ME YOU'LL BE MINE/I REALLY DON'T CARE (7"/MARKET SQUARE)

Hamburg's The Wrong Society return with their second 45 on Market Square Records. 'Tell Me You'll Be Mine' b/w 'I Really Don't Care' sees the band continuing to advance their sound within the moody garage genre proving themselves to be one of Germany's best and most authentic garage bands at the moment. Both sides are influenced by the many American '60s bands that came from cities and suburbs throughout the US during the period 1964-68. The Wrong Society's sound closely resembles the bands that were coming out of the Mid-West and New England at that time and both sides of this 45 would fit perfectly well on a 'Teenage Shutdown' compilation.

BUGS (UK) - THE WORKS E.P. (7"/TRASH WAX)

Trash Wax's 'Garbage Grails' series serves up another prime slab of vintage garage trash from the 1980s, with four unreleased tracks by cult band The Bugs. The tracks were recorded in between tours of the UK and Europe in early 1988 while the band were still promoting their debut album 'Darkside', which had been released by Big Beat in 1987. The recordings feature the new revamped line up following LLoyd Tripps' move to the USA which notably includes a certain bass player who later went on to form indie rock band Lush. The E.P. features pounding new versions of band original 'One Of These Days' and 'Hate' (The Stoics) which had both appeared on the LP, along with further fuzz drenched versions of 'I Must Be Mad' (The Craig) and 'The Bummer' (Lincoln St. Exit). Limited to 300 copies on black vinyl. Play loud!!!

PUNK/HARDCORE

TUNNELRUNNERS - NEATH ABBEY ROAD (CD/ONLY FIT FOR TH)

This 28-track CD is an exploding punk-rock firecracker. The first five cuts are from the band's only release, which appeared in 1981. The other songs are previously unreleased. The Tunnelrunners (active from the late '70s into the early '90s) were a bunch of LONGHAIRED (!) punks from Swansea, which was plenty of reason to be controversial among the more shortsighted people in the scene. In other words: plenty of character guaranteed!

INDUSTRIAL/EXPERIMENTAL/NOISE/NEOFOLK/GOTHIC

GRAND MAL X - DARKNESS (CD/ANT-ZEN)

Drawing from a long and wide palette of influences ranging from dynamic meditation and painters like Arnold Böcklin to sonic artists like Suicide, Coil, Rune Lindblad, and even Skogen, Bathory and Afrika Bambaata, Grand Mal X is an act that refuses to be pigeon-holed soundwise. Its music touches the crossroads of minimal electro-punk, dark synth pop and classic industrial. It`s moody and gloomy, yet also spiritual and empowering. a sound that is at once danceable and disturbing, abstract and catchy, presenting a sonic film noir with an unusual amount of depth and maturity below the disarming and vicious surface.

CORDE OBLIQUE - BACK THROUGH THE LIQUID MIRROR (CD/DARK VINYL)

Corde Oblique is the project of composer Riccardo Prencipe with vocal contributions from numerous female singers and actresses. Their heavenly vocals are embedded in Riccardo's progressive, ethereal folk music. On this album Riccardo is supported by members of Ashram and Argine. The concept of the 'Back Through The Liquid Mirror' album is to capture the energy of their live performances, recorded with the high quality possibilities of a studio session. Therefore these 11 songs have been performed live at the Splash Studios in Naples in a completely different and much more powerful and dynamic way than the previously recordings.

METAL/STONER/HARDROCK

BURNING SAVIOURS - DEATH (BLACK) (LP/TRANSUBSTANS)

This album marks the 15th anniversary of Swedish veterans Burning Saviours. As with 'Nymphs & Weavers' and 'Unholy Tales From The North', Burning Saviours maintain the dark and doomy elements of Pentagram and Cathedral. Many bands over the years have taken great pride in naming Pentagram as a main influence, but it's the '70s-breathing energy that lies within Burning Saviours releases that made the band stand out in the heavy rock/doom scene. And with 'Death', they once again live up to the reputation that made them one of the most extraordinary bands in the heavy scene of today.

CRUTHU - THE ANGLE OF ETERNITY (LP/CHURCH WITHIN)

Based in Lansing, Michigan, Cruthu is comprised of vocalist Ryan Evans, guitarist Dan McCormick, bassist Erik Hemingsen (Scott Lehman also plays on the album), and drummer Matt Fry. 'The Angle Of Eternity' was produced by McCormick and George Szegedy at The Black Lodge in Lansing, and features cover art by Dan McDonald Studios in a grim style perfectly suited to the band's downer and ethereal songcraft. "The album is traditional doom metal with heavy '70s movements and passages - well structured and deliberate," says McCormick in assessing the aesthetic. "We were going for a more lo-fi, circa-'70s sound. Our current goal is to progress the project into some early-NWOBHM over time without compromising our traditional influence."

JAZZ/AVANTGARDE

DOYLE, ARTHUR -TRIO- - ARTHUR DOYLE TRIO (LP/SINNER LADY)

A unique formation on this one of a kind Doyle LP with one long track each side. Deep spiritual dimensions! Recorded in Paris at Studio des Islettes around 2001. Arthur Doyle: tenor sax, Bobby Few: piano, Benoit Gazzal: bass. Limited to 50 copies in paste-on cover, so order fast!

DHARMA - ARCHIPEL (LP/SOUFFLE CONTINU)

Like its predecessor 'End Starting', 'Archipel' is a constructed album, mixing free rock and European free jazz in a series of collective explosions based on abrupt and contrasting improvisations. For much of the time, piano, guitar and saxophone intertwine over intense rhythms, with everything and anything being electrified. Retrospectively, such remarkable timbral combinations, evoking sometimes the freer passages of 'Cinemascope' by Joachim Kühn with Toto Blanke, make the demise of Dharma in 1974, even more regrettable. First ever reissue of this classic recording from 1973. Includes 12-page booklet.

DHARMA QUINTET - END STARTING (LP/SOUFFLE CONTINU)

For Gérard Marais, guitarist with Dharma (the quintet), Albert Ayler's instruction to play your own music was the detonator. This did not fall on deaf ears, and was particularly appropriate as it would have been difficult, even for a musician attracted to free jazz, to make something of his own from the esthetic and political direction taken by Cecil Taylor, Archie Shepp or Sun Ra. First ever reissue of this classic recording from 1971. Includes a 12-page booklet.

DHARMA QUINTET - MR. ROBINSON (LP/SOUFFLE CONTINU)

In an interview with Jazz Magazine in the early 1970s, Dharma, as a collective voice, outlined their method: "we try to reach, within free jazz, the same sort of rhythmic cohesion as in bop, a cohesion based not exactly on tempo, but something which feels like tempo. A kind of underlying pulse". Evidence of these ideas can be heard immediately on listening to 'Mr. Robinson', the first album by the Dharma Quintet, for whom community living seemed obvious, in order to add to the aforementioned cohesion. Through this, the group members played together on a daily basis, trying out things which were worked on day in, day out. They were also listening to a lot of records, with of course a preference for free jazz, but not forgetting Miles Davis in his electric period, notably for the keyboards of Keith Jarrett and Chick Corea. To which should be added esthetical-political concerns based on a refusal of hierarchy, and a desire to escape from a restrictive academic approach. First ever reissue of this classic recording from 1970. Includes a 12-page booklet.

DHARMA TRIO - SNOOPY'S TIME (LP/SOUFFLE CONTINU)

Dharma (as they were simply known at the time when they were still playing) englobed all the incarnations of the group: trio, quartet (essentially as a live band) and quintet. It was built around the stable core of pianist and bassist Patricio Villarroel and Michel Gladieux. 'Snoopy's Time' is their second album, concentrated on the rhythm section including the ever-faithful Jacques Mahieux on drums. It was recorded three months after 'Mr. Robinson', the first album made as a quintet. First ever reissue of this classic recording from 1970. Includes a 12-page booklet.

DIXON, BILL -ENSEMBLE- - LIVE AT BENNINGTON COLLEGE (ONE-SIDED PD) (LP/SINNER LADY)

Rare historical recordings of the Bill Dixon Ensemble with Arthur Doyle at his fiercest! Recorded 11 Dec. 1969. Bill Dixon: flugelhorn, Sam Rivers: tenor and soprano sax, Arthur Doyle: tenor sax, Scott Holt: bass, Andrew Cyrille: drums. Hand-made picture disc, limited to only 30 copies, so be fast!

TYLER, CHARLES -& STEVE REID- - LIVE (LP/SINNER LADY)

Three long tracks by this amazing duo with fantastic solos by Mr. Reid. Recorded at the New England Repertory Theatre, Feb. 25, 1980. Charles Tyler: reeds, Steve Reid: percussion. Limited to 50 copies in paste-on cover, so order fast!

ELECTRONIC MUSIC/AMBIENT/D’N’B/TRIPHOP

EGYPTOLOGY - SUR LES AUTRES MONDES (LP/HANDS IN THE DA)

The Parisian duo Egyptology is made up of Stéphane Laporte (Domotic) and Olivier Lamm, two musicians who have been active since the late 90's in the French post-electronica/avant-pop scene. 'Sur Les Autres Mondes' finds its title and a fitting visual inspiration in a publication by French astronomer Lucien Rudaux (1937, Larousse) in which he imagined the landscapes of other planets in our solar system through scientific descriptions. Partly composed for a performance at the prestigious Louvre Museum in Paris, the album is the band's first full length output since 2012. Their sharp ear for detail and the epic worlds evoked through the album make for an auditory voyage which is as graphic as the words inked by Rudaux. The duo is bringing the '70s kosmiche genre back to life in a very fresh, bold way, offering a strong shot of pure analogue sound and a fantastic, melodic approach to synth-based ambient music.

MIDDEX - NO HOME (LP/POLYTECHNIC YOU)

Following two sought after, sold out 45s on the Polytechnic Youth label, this is the debut LP by Kevin Hendrick's M I D D E X project and right from the off this is no everyday minimal synth project. 10 brutally sharp, icily industrial, analogue synth blasts which tip their hat to those hugely influential days in the late '70s where across the UK, tiny pockets of forward thinking, electronic experimentalists were creating groundbreaking, analogue electronic music, under the radar from almost all, unknowing at the time of course about their impact even to this day.

EFF DST - OUT OF BODY (CD/HYMEN)

While inspirational echoes still permeate this release, EFF DST's autonomous sonic signature is predominant throughout. From a downtempo audio plateau eff dsts mighty, soundtrack-driven compositions evolve to a mixture of pulsating dub-ambient environments and sharpened technoid spheres. Ten tracks of huge compactness and density where deep beats and propulsive bass assaults implant delicate melody lines and detailed harmonic backdrops are experty placed. A powerful and emotional album, highly recommended for connoisseurs of intelligent rhythm-oriented electronics.

MNEMONIC - AVERSIONEN (CD/HYMEN)

The 14 tracks on Mnemonic's eleventh full length album 'Aversionen' showcase clearly structured and solid detailed lines that hark back to the roots of the project which have been less overt on its recent releases. 'Aversionen' is striking as well as versatile, with algorithms which appear neither hazy nor fragile, in fact they selectively focus on its essence where confusing shapes become subtle analog scenes. Intelligent entangled beats join hands with intensive arranged patterns while melancholy melodies infuse with faded grey nuances in apparent dissonance.
