PSYCHEDELIC/PROGRESSIVE/FOLK

MAGIC SHOPPE - DOPPELGANGER/S.F.O. (7"/HYPNOTIC BRIDGE)

Based in Boston and inspired by The Velvet Underground, My Bloody Valentine and other drone-laden, feedback-and-fuzz-loving bands, Magic Shoppe have offered up their own heady concoction of dark, dreamy, shoegaze psychedelia on four EPs and four full-length albums over the past eight years, including 2019's 'Circles' LP. Coincidentally yet appropriately labeling their reverb-heavy sound as "hypnotic," Magic Shoppe's single for Hypnotic Bridge leads off with A-side 'Doppelgänger,' a song originally titled 'Salventius' after the Dutch artist known for his "single-line" drawings of faces. Shelved from an earlier project, the name 'Doppelgänger' was actually suggested by Salventius, given it's a sort of "double" for the original concept for the song. Songwriter and lead guitarist Josiah Webb used three fuzz pedals (with a "fully cocked wah" at the end) with tones turned to pure treble for the fuzz. The ending riff is a nod to Roger McGuinn: highly compressed, clean and with maximum treble, creating a tone that evokes The Byrds' 'Eight Miles High.' Not a reference to San Francisco's airport but, rather, an acronym for 'Skintight Futuristic Outfit,' 'S.F.O.' was conceived and tracked in a single session. The band originally intended to play the song quickly, then reverse it completely, possibly adding forward overdubs, but after hearing the results decided to give it more of a "split-brain" dynamic. The first part of the song is played normally, but after some intentional audio degradation (and Vox Cheetah/Fender Twin amp feedback), descends into a total reverse copy of the beginning, with the exception of a forwards vocal overdub.

DOZER - (BLACK) CALL IT CONSPIRACY (2LP) (LP/HEAVY PSYCH SOUNDS)

Heavy Psych Sounds Records reissues of the first three albums of the Swedish legendary band Dozer: 'In The Tail Of A Comet' (2000, Man's Ruin Records), 'Madre De Dios' (2001) and 'Call It Conspiracy' (2003, both out via Molten Universe). Three masterpieces of the European stoner scene. These three records elevated the scene to a higher level and gave Dozer the scepter of the Scandinavian stoner movement. In the post-Kyuss era, Dozer, along with bands like Los Natas and Acid King, brought a flurry of pure, desert-style monolithic riffs and tons of fuzz guitars. The songwriting on all these three albums was what really distinguished Dozer from the other bands of the early 2000s. The band had a very big influence on the European stoner bands and we can definitely say Dozer are one of the European stoner godfathers.

FAR OUT (JAPAN) - NIHONJIN (LP/EVERLAND)

Some albums are certainly a kind of holy grail for music lovers and collectors of a certain genre, style and era. Far Out with their eponymous debut and unfortunately also farewell album from 1973 have created such a sacred gem. Original copies in good condition change hands for up to $2000 and there are certainly a few not so official reprints on vinyl and CD out on the market which do not even come close to do justice to the greatness of the old original black gold. But here we go with the first ever official vinyl reissue taken directly from the original mastertapes supplied by Nippon Columbia. Everland Music did a brilliant job as usual with their reissues. The cover art with a white glove hanging on a washing line to dry comes on an awesome heavy gatefold sleeve. Including 2 inserts with live photos from back in the day when the band was going wild on stage. This is the real thing for those who still miss the melodies and atmosphere of the late '60s and very early '70s when people had a dream of a peaceful world and who enjoy early German cosmic kraut rock like Amon Düül II, Organisation (later to become Kraftwerk), the debut album by Tangerine Dream and more obscure stuff but also international bands like Pink Floyd, Gong, Twink and Hawkwind just as an East Asian version. A real gem and finally available with the real sound and package again.

KOSMOS - AJAN PEILI (LP/KOSMOS)

Kosmos is a folk-progressive group from Turku, Finland. Their main influences come from folk, progressive and psychedelic rock of the early seventies. The lyrics, sung by their female singer Päivi Kylmänen, are in Finnish, but English translations are also included on their albums. The songs rely on strong atmosphere and interesting lyrics. According to Olli Valtonen, the main lyric writer, the general idea in the lyrics is "the other reality" (mainly the cosmic and mystic one). On the fifth album, 'Ajan Peili', Kosmos continues in their own original style! Limited to 300 copies only.

SODEN - ONWARDS... TOWARDS THE TUNDRA (LP/DIRTY FILTHY)

YTe second full length LP by Soden, 'Onwards... Towards The Tundra' is a journey across a frozen landscape beautifully presented alongside the incredible artwork of guitarist Daz Blocksidge. Hailing from Worcester in deepest darkest England, Soden are a three piece instrumental band formed in early 2014. Magnify your thoughts with valve amps and low end grooves. Limited to 250 copies on 140 gram "Mr Blue Sky" transparent vinyl accompanied with an exclusive insert.

TAUTUMEITAS - DZIESMAS NO AULEJAS - SONGS FROM AULEJA (LP/CPL-MUSIC)

Auleja is a small village in Latvia's eastern region of Latgale where a rich heritage of folklore has been preserved. It is precisely the traditional vocal music of this area, characterised by smooth, graceful melodies and a specific style of multipart singing, that has earned particular recognition. The longevity of Auleja's traditional music is linked to the work of the Aulejas Sievas (women from Auleja) ethnographic ensemble, which is one of the oldest such ensembles in Latvia. This album is a tribute to Auleja, to its three generations of singers and their families. Limited to 300 copies on white vinyl.

TAUTUMEITAS - TAUTUMEITAS (LP/CPL-MUSIC)

Female vocal ensemble from Latvia. They started with traditional singing and tried to echo the traditional chanters. The closer they came to the songs it felt natural for them to include it with everything they had heard and felt in their own world. Now they play folk songs using voices and timbrally appealing instruments involving them in their sound. Comes on red vinyl, limited to 500 copies and has different artwork.

GARAGE/BEAT/SURF/ROCK’N’ROLL

COURETTES - DINAMITE EP (7"/GROOVIE)

Killer EP from The Courettes. Four tracks totally influenced by Northern soul. Fuzzzzz!!!

DEAD ELVIS & HIS ONE MAN GRAVE/HOMBRE LOBO INTERNACIONAL - HORROR DINER VOLUME 1 (7"/FAMILY SPREE)

Two rock'n'roll freak bands return to inaugurate a series called "Horror Diner" with their first volume: Dead Elvis & His One Man Grave.

LOS AMAZONAS - AHORA ES CUANDO (7"/FAMILY SPREE)

Los Amazonas are a Mallorcan punk garage quartet which has taken influences from groups such as Siniestro Total, The Cynics or the New York punk scene of the 70s. Their first four-track EP gives a representative impression, and includes artwork by comic artist Ata Lasalle.

ROUTES - TUNE OUT SWITCH OFF DROP IN (LP/GROOVIE)

Recorded over a period of 18 months by Chris Jack and drummer Bryan Styles, 'Tune Out, Switch Off, Drop In' is the seventh studio album from Japan based trio The Routes. The album title and cover are a modern take on the famous Timothy Leary phrase 'Turn On, Tune In, Drop Out' and LP of the same title. Both the title and imagery have been changed to reflect the f%$ked up world we live in today. The album contains ten original songs, all tied in with the statement of the album title and artwork. Everything from songs of entitlement, manipulation, misinformation, decadence and denial, to songs of love, hope, acceptance and much more... Although the music is garage/psych on the surface, you can hear subtle references to other '60s inspired music such as '80s UK indie/shoegaze, as well as punk, US indie and krautrock. It's like '60s garage punk (Back From The Grave, Nuggets-style), with elements of Sonic Youth, Spacemen 3, Can, Sonic Youth, Loop, The Fall... Describing the sound of this album sounds crazy in words but it works, and what's even crazier is that it still unmistakably sounds like The Routes!

SPACEWASTERS - THE BAND THAT WOULDN'T DIE (LP/TRASH WAX)

The Spacewasters are one of London's finest trash/garage (with a hint of 'billy') combos. 10 tracks of top notch trash on lovely red vinyl with fantastic artwork by King Rat (Gilles from The Garbage Bags). Only 300 copies of this monster have been pressed.

UGLY FLY GUYS - CULT OF BUZZ (LP/TRASH WAX)

Probably the baddest, meanest band in Trashland and they ain't going to win any beauty contests either! Scuzzy, dirty throbbing bass lines, echoey, reverb laden guitar and a touch of spooky keyboards make this 21st century crossover between The Mummies, Mudhoney and The Phantom Chords, a welcome breath of fresh air in a world of samey, copycat crap! Retro these guys are not! Scuzz and fuzz with a trashabilly beat. Get the buzzzz!

GUITAR SLINGERS - LIVE IN HAMBURG (LP/TRASH WAX)

Stunning release which captures Doyley & The Slingers at their best. The man has done such a great job on the mastering that you would swear you are there! The fantastic setlist includes a killer version of The Outcasts' 'Seven Deadly Sins', The Guns Of Diablo and 'The Fly With The X-Ray Eyes' 14 tracks of roof lifting sound which will please any fan of rockinpsychosurftrash! Strictly limited to 300 copies.

POP/ROCK/WAVE/NOISE

BE POSITIVES - THE BE POSITIVES (LP/WHITE ZOO)

This Mancunian band sees among its ranks some members from Proto Idiot, but the proposal here is decidedly different. The Be Positives will not struggle to break through the hearts that beat for that pure British sound that starts from the Beatles and Kinks, passing from Bolan to Elvis Costello and Nick Lowe, straight down to the not so distant feats of the late '80s/early '90s bands. All served up with a capacity for synthesis and a humor that can only be of a modern band. Here it is again a band from Manchester that is worth rewarding with success. Don't miss their first debut album, only 300 copies around for this very first press.

GASC, JULIEN - L'APPEL DE LA FORET (LP/BORN BAD)

Confession, fiction, and observation. This is how the trajectory drawn by Julien Gasc seems to evolve from one album to the next. 'L'Appel De La Foret' concludes his trilogy in a tender and spontaneous dialogue, broaching the present with clairvoyance through melodies with bright glimmers. More adventurous than its predecessors, which respectively took root in the south of France and in London, this third chapter offers a kaleidoscopic vision, multiplying geographies and temporalities to ingrain itself in the moment all the better. Comes with download code.

ONLY ONES - LIVE IN CHICAGO 1979 (LP/ALONA'S DREAM)

Alona's Dream Records and Regressive Films present the Only Ones 'Live In Chicago 1979 - Sunday Morning Nightmare Vol. 1'. This live release documents Chicago performances of the Only Ones as originally aired on Chicago punk DJ Terry Nelson's Sunday Morning Nightmare radio show in 1979. This no nonsense set was recorded by legendary mobile recording guru Timothy Powell of Metro Mobile Recording. This previously unreleased show finds the Only Ones at the peak of their early career. The set features a solid list of future classics drawn from their first three studio albums, deep cuts and influential hit singles. Limited to 500 copies on red vinyl.

VARIOUS - WELL UP.....AND BUBBLE! (CD/DISCOFOON)

Reissue on CD of a compilation album from 1985. The album contains a collection of songs from bands that at the time maintained good relations with each other. Eton Crop, Blue Murder and Claw Boys Claw were at the beginning of their successes in the Netherlands. Several of the songs on this album have not appeared on any other release and are therefore exclusive for this collection. The restoration of the music was done by Fred Tabois from moldy tapes found by members of Eton Crop whilst preparing their 40th anniversary as a band. TRACKS: 01. Claw Boys Claw - Pain 02. The Mekons - Flitcraft 03. The Three Johns - World Of The Workers (Live) 04. Blue Murder - Explanation 05. Eton Crop - Boy Meets Tractor 06. Blue Murder - The Castle Song 07. INDUSTRIAL/EXPERIMENTAL/NOISE/NEOFOLK/GOTHIC

BAKER, AIDAN -& GARETH DAVIS- - INVISIBLE CITIES II (LP/KARLRECORDS)

Aidan Baker (Nadja, B/B/S) and bass clarinetist Gareth Davis continue their fruitful collaboration with 'Invisible Cities II' - five tracks of finest ambient/chamber jazz and subtle drones of a highly meditative quality. Available as 180 gram LP including download code.

MAEROR TRI - THE BEAUTY OF SADNESS (CD/INFINITE FOG)

'The Beauty Of Sadness' is an emotional, melancholic, sentimental, melodic drone ambient album, which can be considered a classic of the genre on a par with 'Myein'. You will search in vain for industrial or noise elements, as featured on the group's more heavy releases, herein the eponymous beauty and sadness reign supreme. This release comes highly recommended for any listener with only a passing interest in drone-music, be it guitar- and electronic-based. Recorded between October '91 and September '93, 'The Beauty Of Sadness' became the 11th full-length Maeror Tri tape, which was released in 1996 shortly before their breakup on the very peak of the group's strength. The bonus track 'Immersion In Emotion' was recorded around the same sessions as the album itself in October 1993, and first appeared on the video collection 'From The Hills Of Dream'. Fully remastered in 2019 by Peter Andersson (raison d'etre) resulting in a literally shockingly improved sound experience, the erroneously added silent tracks from its earlier CD incarnation have been deleted and the overall previously ubiquitous surface noise removed.

METAL/STONER/HARDROCK

5RAND - DARK MOTHER (LP/TIME TO KILL)

'Dark Mother' is 5RAND's second studio work, where the band confirms its prowess in combining melody with heavy, aggressive riffing, clean vocals and growling. The album discloses a mature and modern metal songwriting that brings to life a dark, disturbing and violent, and yet captivating atmosphere. Produced, recorded and mixed by Marco Mastrobuono at Kick Recording Studio and Bloom Recording Studios. Mastered by Jens Bogren at Fascination Street Studios in Sweden. Keyboards and arrangement on Silent Spring by Francesco Ferrini from Fleshgod Apocalypse. For fans of Arch Enemy, Dark Tranquillity, Slipknot, In fLames and Fear Factory

BLUES/COUNTRY/OLDIES

NINE BELOW ZERO - AVALANCHE (+7") (LP/HEAVY SOUL)

What needs to be said about Nine Below Zero that you shouldn't already know! They bleed blue! The most blueswailing band since The Yardbirds, 2019 celebrates 40 years since that infamous Old Kent Road gig where the band were spotted by Mickey Modern (who knew a bit about R&B) and launched them onto the world. A good band always keep producing and they certainly have on this album -no re-hashes of older tunes, no covers- just thirteen brand new tracks spread across one LP and one very special single for CHRISTMAS!!!

JAZZ/AVANTGARDE

ABRAMS, MUHAL RICHARD - CELESTIAL BIRDS (LP/KARLRECORDS)

The compilation 'Celestial Birds' reveals and focuses on the widely unkown electronic compositions of the AACM founder and jazz pianist Muhal Richard Abrams. This album casts a light on the underrated experimenter, his innovative approach to composition and pieces that lay dormant for way too long.

PLEIADEES - PLEIADEES (LP/SUBSOUND)

2019 EP by these Italian dark jazz ritualists. Pleiadees' music digs deep in search of forgotten jewels. It uses the methods of free rock, jazz, and improvisation and transcends them all. It's world music for these disjointed times were all in.

SNIJDERS, RONALD - NATURAL SOURCES (LP/EVERLAND JAZZ)

Some albums show you right away what kind of spirit backs them. Ronald Snijders' solo debut from 1977, 'Natural Sources', is one of these. It begins with a free improvised, sometimes scatting flute and while the flute goes more and more crazy some scat vocals join in to make this first track a kinda strange affair. Jazz, free and spirited, seems the way but Ronald Snijders, son of Surinamese composer Eddy Snijders, outwits us in all our tiny minded expectations with the next song already. An evergrooving base of polyrhythmical grooves from several percussion instruments builds the ground from which captivating flute patterns arise. The foundation is a repetitive Latin beat influenced by Brazilian dance music but the free jazz flute eruptions on top make it a wicked listening experience, even though this is just the middle section of the song and the beginning and ending themes show a rather lighthearted jazz sound with Latin grooves. So here we go. Ronald Snijders explores the depths of his musical heritage, the Latin and the jazz and really pulls it off here. The next tune even drifts into a kind of exotica direction with a rather picturesque approach that drags images of indigenous dances in a jungle surrounding to the listener's mind but then Snijders falls back on free jazz with reduced arrangement and his fondness for avantgarde sounds wins over. This is certainly a challenge for music lovers due to the fact that next we face the return of the Latin jazz with a slightly more modern fusion feel. All instruments on all the songs get played only by Ronald Snijders by the way. I think this is important to mention if you want to understand the whole width of his talent. Latin jazz the way Snijders composes and performs is far from silky elevator fusion. He plays with passion and his creations might have a lightweight appearance from time to time but all those little percussion themes, the guitar harmonies, the time changes and sounds echoing from far beyond the surface make this a real challenge for the listener. This record has an accessible side but demands full attention. A thrilling masterpiece where Latin jazz, free jazz and fusion flow into another for some great new music. Even elements of 1950s electronic music find their way onto this record and although just as an interlude. For those who dare this is the sacred progressive jazz fusion grail.

This 1978 roots reggae LP, containing ten songs, was only released in Jamaica on the GG label, and includes masterpieces like 'Africa Now', 'Wondering', 'Corruption' and 'Wicked Is Down On Me'. The song 'The Gate Of Zion' was a re-make of 'Nuh Follow Babylon' from the previous released 'Slave Call' album. A former Studio One classic 'I'm Gonna Take Over Now' was included re-titled as 'I'm Gonna Take It Over' besides an updated version of Sir J.J. hit 'Selah'. After 41 years and through much positive energy and efforts, the Dutch Jamaican Art label presents 'Open The Gate Of Zion' LP again for a broader public. Besides all ten songs, carefully transferred from the original two-track master tapes, it also has new art-work/front cover, a gatefold sleeve and a bonustrack. The beautiful 'Rastaman Song' was previously released only on a limited run of a 12-inch record (GG label, Jamaica, 1980). The special disco-mix that appears here is never issued on vinyl before. It's a comforting thought that we still can enjoy the music of a true Jamaican hero, mr. Leonard 'The Ethiopian' Dillon.

SOUL/FUNK/LATIN/R&B/GOSPEL

TEREA - TEREA (LP/EVERLAND)

Anybody remember Street Feet? These guys used to be an all instrumental 1970s funk act with a cineastic feel, means that their music could easily have been used as library music for TV productions, especially police movies. They had one album in 1977 and then disappeared. At least it seemed so. But they rather teamed up with singer Sharon Robinson, who has been background vocalist with Leonard Cohen and songwriter for people like Diana Ross, Patti Labelle or Michael Bolton later on and was reluctant to use her own name on the album for tax shelter issues with her label. Since her middle name is Terea, as it was said, this became the project name as well. Original copies from the long since vanished Baby Grand label fetch prices of $1500 and more, so here Everland Music, who own the whole catalogue of the Baby Grand label, kick out the jams with their ultimate reissue of this classic. The music on this outstanding album could easily be regarded as some of the greatest late '70s black music. And what a great variation of sounds do we find here. Smooth funk with a silkier edge and piercing synthesizers, soul pop with lush arrangements, giant harmonies and a cineastic atmosphere or warm and soulful ballads, no matter what, it is in here. Comes in special handmade embossed cover.

DANCE/TECHNO/HOUSE/HIPHOP

GEEK X VRV - TIME MACHINE (LP/ALLO FLORIDE AR)

Vanguards of the French instrumental hip-hop scene, the Geek and VRV come with their first album, 'Time Machine', a synthesis of the sounds and the ideas from the very beginning of their careers. A trip back through time, as the title suggests, demonstrating the range of sound possibilities that they created in previous projects and on their international tours.

AFRO-BEAT/FUNK & PSYCH/DESERT BLUES/ETHIOPIQUES

AKAEZE, ERIC (SHOWBOY) -& HIS ROYAL ERICOS- - IKOTO ROCK (LP/EVERLAND AFRO)

There we go with another Afro beat classic that did not really leave Nigeria back in the day it was released. Therefore we can only guess the value among collectors but some reliable sources tell us that even not so mint original copies go for up to $600. The Afrodisia sublabel of Decca Music is responsible for quite a few awesome Afro beat gems that have only recently been rediscovered by never sleeping music lovers such as the folks behind Everland Music from The Netherlands and here we go with the first ever official reissue of Eric Showboy Akaeze's second album with His Royal Ericos. Eric Showboy Akaeze was former bigband leader who was hip on the Nigerian scene, which mostly happened around the main city of Lagos in the '60s and especially '70s after the military junta took over the reign and was keen to bring in more indegenious elements to the peoples allday lives and a new style of music emerged, Afro beat, mixing western rock and funk, rocksteady and soul with rhythms and melodies that clearly had an African heritage. He was nicknamed Ikoto, which is the Nigerian word for a spinner, the child's toy, due to his dancing style where he was spinning around like mad during shows. He was an extraordinary dancer and showman and what mostly interests us, he was a wonderful bandleader and musician. When Fela Kuti became the rising star on the scene and soon the musician most hated by the regime, Akaeze soon fell into Kuti's shadow but he maintained his musical activities until his untimely death in 2002 and with this, his second masterpiece 'Ikoto Rock', referring to his nickname and his own style Akaeze created from this, his legacy was carved in rock. What kind of music shall we now expect from this 1974 release? The original holds 4 lengthy, groovy compositions with a jammy, nearly improvised feeling in some parts, for the reissue Everland Music dragged out the utterly scarce 7" 'Akalaka' from 1975 (even beat up copies go for $700) and added both tracks to the A and B side of the album respectively. It fits well with the haunting, nearly hypnotizing style of 'Ikoto Rock'. There is always a repetitive beat, a dense network of grooves in the background of each song which build the foundation for the commanding vocals shouted out with passion for life and the harmonic arrangements of guitar, farfisa organ and brass section melodies. These songs are too furious and powerful for plain reggae and rocksteady. Listen to the simmering leads performed by Akaeze on a tenor saxophone. This is nearly eruptive. He loves to give his audience a break sometimes, adding passages with the feeling of a religious or military chant to enchant his listeners entirely. All this creates a steaming atmosphere and puts you, who gets this record spinning on his turntable, into a trance like state during the duration of the album. Most songs here were sung in Akaeze's native tongue or at least some English based lingo that includes many African words. You can easily feel how good the musicians are, due to the clear production that was a standard for Decca/Afrodosia releases back then. Still this album has a raw and honest feeling making it a simmering and intense musical affair.

BLO - BULKY BACKSIDE - BLO IS BACK (LP/EVERLAND AFRO)

In opposite to other Nigerian acts which hardly got known beyond the borders of their homeland, Blo were always very popular in the western world. Accompanying Ginger Baker of Cream fame was the first step to break them into the western popular music market of the '70s and what followed could be called an African fairy tale. Still this, their fifth album from 1979, waited a long time for a proper reissue, especially on hot black wax with originals in good conditions fetching prices of 300 euros and more. Everland Music had merci with the fans of pure late '70s disco funk who adore such killer units as Earth, Wind & Fire or Hot Chocolate or probably the then modified Temptations which all were leading figures of the real music department in the disco scene.

BUCKNOR, SEGUN -'S REVOLUTION- - SON OF JANUARY 15 (LP/JET RECORDS)

Segun Bucknor was one of the most important figures in the Nigerian music scene of the '70s, despite having only a brief career with his Afrobeat unit which in 1972 released this superb album of which originals usually not turn up at any price. A reissue like this on Jet Records therefore is long overdue to enable every woman and man with a fondness for African popular music of the '70s to take a closer listen to this gem and fall in love immediately. What do we get to listen here? Well, the album consists of four lengthy tracks with long instrumental sections that generate a swallowing atmosphere of sheer simmering heat and awakes the primal desire to dance within each and every listener. This album really gets you in case you have an affinity for jazz, for funky grooves, for long tracks and for a simmering atmosphere. A classic that still got lost in time to be rediscovered by a new generation of music lovers nearly 50 years after the initial release. Haunting!

NYENWI, THONY SHORBY - SWEET FUNK MUSIC (LP/JET RECORDS)

Who said that all Nigerian Afrobeat from the '70s was dark and though provoking with a melancholic edge despite the ongoing powerful grooves and a more or less political message denouncing the the methods of the country's leaders to increase their own wealth and power while the simple people suffer. Well, this 1978 album by bandleader Thony Shorby Nyenwi proves this idea wrong. What we have here is a sacredly rare gem, fetching 300 euros for a copy in playable condition. A crown jewel of Nigerian Afrobeat and funk music that is an utter joy listening to. Thony Nyenwi's music is a monument of the genre carved in rock. His vocal melodies are more at the lighter and happier side of life, somehow hypnotizing with reduced note progressions on repetitive rhythm figures that rush through your whole body to make you groove along. A fine funky wah wah guitar sound and a mind blowing keyboard sound including electric piano, farfisa organ and others hook up to add colour to the stoic rhythms. The atmosphere literally cooks. This is certainly more modern with a slightly more polished feel than the political music of Fela Kuti or Segun Bucknor, but still bears an unparalleled intensity that makes this album a dance floor sweeper at each club. Coloured lights are flashing into the white haze from the fogging machines when people in glittering bell bottom trousers and twinkling shirts happily get into the groove. '70s galore. Well, the folks can also shift down a gear and rock out a sweet reggae tune that later on turns into a smooth funk, to add more variety to this black wax jewel. No matter what Thony and his mates do here, they do it with passion and divine talent. The arrangements are a dense network of sounds, beats, melodies, voices and it goes on and on throughout the whole record. You as a fan of 1970s black music, funk, reggae, soul, all mixed up in a typical Nigerian way, will be enchanted and become swallowed by the holy cloud emerging from the speakers. A beautiful discovery after such a long time that will bring more joy to a new generation of black music aficionadoes.

Andaleeb Wasif was born in a well-known family of Hyderabad, India in 1928. A self-taught singer and harmonium player. He gained recognition early in life, performing for the Nizam (ruler) of Hyderabad when he was only six years old. On this recording Wasif performs six ghazals, a poetic form of couplets focussing on love and longing with mystical and spiritual elements. The lyrics to the ghazals featured on the recording are written by some of the best known Urdu poets of the 20th century including Faiz Ahmad Faiz. Andaleeb's renditions are enigmatic, filled with pathos, timeless and ethereal.
