PSYCHEDELIC/PROGRESSIVE/FOLK

ACTION (UK) - BRAIN (FULL LENGTH VERSION)/IN MY DREAM (7"/SOLUTION)

Both tracks are full-on late '60s psychedelic masterpieces - the full-length version of 'Brain' with all it's phasey, chord-driven guitars, rolling drums, dreamy bass and of course Reg's voice encouraging us to 'Remember Me', hardly gonna forget Reg - ya legend!!! All extra freakout included on what is the first time the full-length version has been released on vinyl!!! The flip is more of the same, drawing us in slowly, with a Beatles 'White Album' style riff before exploding into a psyche dream with flutes, those infamous Action harmonies and some added Hammond for even more special effects.

CANNIBALE - PETIT ORANG OUTAN (7"/BORN BAD)

Two tracks from the French world/crossover band Cannibale.

CRUMBLE FACTORY - DARLING LEMONADE (LP/LE POP CLUB)

The Crumble Factory's indie-pop is all about the art of arranging details, the need to avoid self repetition and the joy of playing. Rem Austin is not afraid of bending some rules, freeing himself from the verse/chorus corset through the use of creative collages that turn out to be subtly psychedelic doors. 'Darling Lemonade' contains irresistible melodies that appeal to 90's indie rock bands such as Teenage Fanclub, Pixies, Boo Radleys and Weezer.

CULTO AL QONDOR - TANNHAUSER TOR (LP/WORST BASSIST)

Peruvian krautrockers, spaceheads, psychedelic warriors or just droners of Culto al Qondor are back with a record titled 'Tannhäuser Tor'. 2 long songs in a more ambient way, nevertheless, darker and very deep space. The album was recorded with a cell phone in one take, no overdubs, with a very punky or DIY attitude and it captured the smokey trippy vibe of the performance by these two Peruvians. Think of Berlin School (Ash Ra Tempel, Klaus Schulze) meets '90s post rock (Labradford, Flying Saucer Attack) and you get an idea. Culto al Qondor started in 2003 as a jam band, but it's until 2017 that they decided to start to record albums. Comes on green vinyl.

MANUEL, GERARDO - & C.V.P. (LP/DISCOS MONTEREY)

Peruvian musician Manuel Gerardo was a leading member of the influential '60s bands Los Doltons, Los Shain's and The (St. Thomas) Pepper Smelter. Now his progressive masterpiece from 1973, which he recorded with the group Humo, sees its first ever reissue on vinyl!

MARMALADE KNIVES - AMNESIA (ORANGE) (LP/ELECTRIC VALLEY)

Marmalade Knives was formed in the mountains of Santa Cruz, CA, as a collaboration between guitarists Clinton Wilkins and Justin Spivey, exploring the depths of outer-limits psychedelia. Wilkins spent several years studying with David First (acclaimed minimalist/microtonal composer and member of cult '70s/'80s NYC no-wave legends The Notekillers) and Spivey is a well-regarded collector/historian of original period psychedelic/progressive music, writer at UK psych rag Moof Magazine, and recent songwriting contributor to the underground cult film 'The Yucca Sisters' by Samuel Casebolt. The lineup of the band eventually grew to a full-on 5 member troupe of local freak-rock'n'rollers, including bassist Mark Robinson, drummer Kyle Herrenkohl (of SF acid-folkers Tabernacle), and keyboardist Nathan Warrick (of Apache Dropout). In the summer of 2018 they tracked their debut album at Loud House Studio in Santa Cruz, CA, and over the following year+ the production and mixing of the album was helmed by Adam Kriney (of The Golden Grass/La Otracina). 'Amnesia' is a sprawling tapestry of classically inspired progressive psychedelia. A voyage through a mythical cosmic rock universe, layered with dense squalls of abstract sound collage and fields of freeform freakouts, all coloured with old-world folk melodies/modalities and pulsing with a funky rhythm section! Comes on transparant orange vinyl.

PAR ASITO - SINGULARITY (LP/DIRTY FILTHY)

Par Asito's 4th full-length album. Hailing from Guadalajara, Mexico, this album merges space rock, noise and space exploration. Usually driven as a power trio, although this may vary depending on where the show takes place, Par Asito's music is aimed to provoke changes in the micro cosmos of the guts. Based on science-gone-wrong movies and space travel, their presentations are characterized by its potency and brutality. Sounds that evoke to that space beyond the event horizon of a black hole, two stars collapsing, or devouring each other. When spaceship chases begin in the galaxy, Par Asito will be the soundtrack. Limited to 250 copies on black and pink Cadillac half/half vinyl.

ROCCO'S RED CLOUD - CIRCUS DE PLAGUE (2LP) (LP/CLOSTRIDIUM)

Psychedelic, progressive, stoner, blues, rock from Dortmund. The late '60s and early '70s, that was the great time of classic rock trios. With irrepressible energy, boundless passion, improvisation and incredible dynamics, three-pieces like The Jimi Hendrix Experience, Cream, Rory Gallagher's band Taste, Blue Cheer, Mountain or Johnny Winter and his band, revolutionized rock music. Keeping up their tradition, Rocco's Red Cloud, a young trio from the eastern Ruhr area, are getting ready to add new facets to that classic sound. The heavy, psychedelic blues rock sound of the sixties role models is now enriched by the youngsters with the musical benefits of subsequent rock generations, to create their own sound. Limited to 150 copies on black vinyl.

SPIRAL DRIFT - ON THE SHADOW LINE (LP/SPINNING WHEELS)

Spiral Drift is a band of friends formed in the spring of 2014, during the peak of the 21st century dystopian crisis of Athens, Greece. They set out on a trip into uncharted waters, using blues and desert rock, psychedelia, country and soul as their vehicle, staring firmly at the open sea and clear skylines, standing solid in their belief that creative expression and solidarity should prevail within music. Influenced by the great tradition of rock'n'roll and major musical trends of '60s, '70s and '80s, they tell their stories about the anguish and joys of existence, the darkness and light that form the horizon of being. Already having on their track record a 10" vinyl EP with the label of Anazitisi Mood and plenty of live performances in Greece, Spiral Drift now release their debut album, as a limited gatefold vinyl edition, under the label of Spinning Wheels. Where Vanishing Point goes Laurel Canyon; be prepared for some serious American Cosmic Music experience!

ST. THOMAS PEPPER SMELTER - SOUL & PEPPER (LP/DISCOS MONTEREY)

An essential Peruvian psych album, originally released in 1969 and featuring ex-members of legendary garage/beat group Los Shain's, makes its welcome return to vinyl! On offer are some far-out originals (most notably the track 'Betty Boom, Little Monster-Doggie And Peggie At The Witches Castle') as well as covers of songs by a.o. Iron Butterfly, Hendrix, Cream and Music Machine.

CAROL OF HARVEST - CAROL OF HARVEST (CD/GARDEN OF DELIGHTS)

Carol Of Harvest were founded in the German town of Furth in 1976 and played folk with psychedelic touch. Their only LP was released in the summer of 1978 as a very small edition of only 200 copies, on the Brutkasten label. This CD reissue on Garden Of Delights contains a 32-page booklet with many as yet unreleased photographs and, for the first time ever, seven bonus tracks. The last four of them are studio recordings featuring Iris Meyer, succeeding Beate Krause as a singer.

EPIDERMIS - JUNE 1975 (CD/GARDEN OF DELIGHTS)

Epidermis were founded in Idstein, Germany, in 1971. They played some complex and sophisticated rock music, often compared with Gentle Giant, Yes and the Canterbury scene. 'June 1975' has not been released on any physical format back then, and has been made available for the first time. The CD contains five bonus tracks that do not appear on the LP version.

SHEM - NO SONGS, JUST WORDS (CD/CLOSTRIDIUM)

Psychedelic jam rock from Stuttgart, Germany. SHEM is a collective of musicians aiming to create improvisational sound pieces influenced by a wide range of eras and strains of Psychedelic music: From early Krautrock bands such as Amon Düül, Can and Popol Vuh, to the oscellation driven space rock of Hawkwind and the meandering soundscapes created by contemporary bands such as Oresund Space Collective and Kungens Män. Through combining elements of Ambient, Drone, Psych and Space Rock into epic, reverb drenched jams, Shem take the listener onto a cosmic journey into their own realm of musical experimentation: No songs, just sound! Limited to 300 copies.

TIN PAN ALLEY - TIN PAN ALLEY (CD/GARDEN OF DELIGHTS)

Tin Pan Alley were founded in 1978 in Germany. The band played progressive rock in the style of the early 1970s. In 1981, they recorded four tracks as a demo tape, but they did not manage to get the interest from a label. This also due to the fact, that music from the Neue Deutsche Welle was at its heyday. The album thus remained unreleased back then and after decades it finally sees an official release.

GARAGE/BEAT/SURF/ROCK’N’ROLL

BONTEMPI, MARCEL - DOWN BOUND TRAIN (7"/TWI-LITE)

Another two sided smash from Twi-Lite which sees Marcel take on the offbeat Chuck Berry track 'Downbound Train' a tale of tormented souls on a hell-bound journey to Satan central. The B-side is a scorching rendition of 'Flipsville' featuring some mean sax playing from Doc Puky, of Ray Collins Hot Club fame. This edition goes all out with a top quality sleeve (heavy guage, a 3mm spine and glossy finish) but the cherry is the 20 page booklet of Mr Bontempi's artwork detailing the lyrics of 'Downbound Train' page by page. A true collectors item in the making, as with all Twi-Lite releases there will be no repress and when they are gone, they're gone.

BONTEMPI, MARCEL - OPENS HIS POISON CABINET (7"/SLEAZY)

Sleazy Records celebrates its 200th release with this 7" by Marcel Bontempi, which comes in a special gatefold sleeve with pop-up! The vinyl contains the tracks 'Handsome Girl' and 'Gonna Have Myself A Ball'.

CLAIM/JIM RILEY'S BLUES FOUNDATION - SPRING TURNS TO WINTER/LOVE'S GOT A HOLD ON ME (7"/SPINOUT NUGGETS)

Limited to 300 hand-numbered copies, The Claim's 'Spring Turns To Winter' is a reflection on getting older. Lyrically it was inspired by Sinatra's 'It Was A Good Year'. Musically there are notes of treacle and spice. Jim Riley's Blues Foundation's 'Love's Got A Hold Of Me' has some beautiful harp, guitar, Hammond and a massively loud Motown-esque tambourine. Jim sings with soul from experience.

DRAG SET/SCOTS OF ST JAMES - DAY AND NIGHT/TIC TOC (7"/SOLUTION)

The Scots Of St James - 'Tic Toc': Fancy a moody Hammond groove with great guitar, deep, solid vocals and a prime slice of a 1966 Go Records rarity? Look no further than this £500+ track!! The band formed in Glasgow starting off as The In Crowd before moving to London and became the house band at The Scotch Of St James, a trendy club, and eventually changing their name to Hopscotch who released a couple of singles including the fantastic 'Look At The Lights Go Up'. The Drag Set - 'Day And Night': What a tune this is - pure unadulterated psyche dancefloor Modness on the other side! One of the most desirable and hard to find records from the amazing Go Records stable, regularly selling at £250+, even reaching £650 at one point. From the Yardbirds/Fleur De Lys/The Who style intro this gets everyone up. This is the band's only single, before evolving into The Open Mind and getting even more great tunes out.

VARIOUS - GUNSMOKE, VOL. 6 (10") (10"/STAG-O-LEE)

Sixth volume in a limited edition series on Stag-O-Lee. Limited to 666 copies and packaged in a nice 10" sleeve with center hole. This is a collection of oddball country weepers, moody rockabilly, widescreen country & western and popcorn noir from the 1950s and early '60s. So turn out the lights, sit back and relax to the soundtrack from a jukebox in a ghost town... For best results: listen to after dark! SIDE 1. 1. Dorsey Burnette - The Devil's Queen 2. Slim Whitman - North Wind 3. Jimmie Driftwood - Mooshata 4. Larry Hall - Lovin' Tree 5. Jody Reynolds - The Whipping Post 6. Jimmy Lloyd - Where The Rio De Rosa Flows SIDE 2: 1. Foy Willing & The Riders Of The Purple Sage - Stampede 2. Johnny Carroll - Bandstand Doll 3. Paul Evans - Samuel Hall 4. Dennis Roberts - Blue Carnation 5. Virgil Holmes - My Downfall 6. Mike Jarrett & Gene Herd - Devil's Hand

BANG BANG GIRL/TRASH COLAPSO - ONE FOOT ON DEATH ROAD (LP/TRASH WAX)

Fantastic album from these two South American trash mongers... Gun Club/Suicide/Cramps mash up with haunting vocals... Hailing from Chile, Bang Bang Girl Band should need no introduction as she's rather well known already through her other releases, radio show and frequent tours/gigs... Trash Colapso is from Argentina and a bit of a local legend (Bloodshot Bill style). In a world populated by plenty of power duos and one man bands, here are a couple that really stand out, if you like your trash bluesy with solid Gun Club influences, you'll love this, if you like your rockabilly primitive and menacing, you'll love this... If you've a decent pair of ears, you'll love this!

FANSCENE - FRENCH POETRY REVISITED (LP/PAISLEY ARCHIVE)

The complete recordings of the excellent '90s Swedish mod and garagerock revivalists. The CD contains 16 cuts that will make fans of a.o. The Hives, Creeps and Crimson Shadows go wild! For the first time on vinyl.

This is a collection of oddball country weepers, moody rockabilly and popcorn noir from the 1950s and early '60s. POP/ROCK/WAVE/NOISE

TIJ - GIG ECONOMY (CD/SEJA)

Barry Snaith (m1nk) is now also active solo under the name TIJ (The Inconsistent Jukebox) of which 'Gig Economy' has been released by the Dutch labels Candy Bomber Music and Seja Records. It's an album that cannot be labeled which creates an atmosphere that can perfectly support an art house film or a film by Polanski.

PUNK/HARDCORE

DISCHARGE - EARLY DEMOS MARCH/JUNE 1977 (LP/RADIATION)

Repress on red vinyl. Well, this is not the same Discharge that you all know and love. Technically it's the same band, but it sounds completely different. As the title states, this LP is their early demo recordings from March-June, 1977. The whole record screams of the early days of young, snotty, pissed off punks filled with teen angst. If you're a huge Discharge completist, you should pick this up, or if your really into the raw, primal 77 punk sound.

GERMS - CAT'S CLAUSE (BLACK) (LP/RADIATION)

'Cat's Clause' includes rare live material from the Hong Kong Café, as well as material from Darby Crash's final concert at the Starwood in 1980, and more rare material, outtakes etc., all accompanied by a lavish gatefold sleeve and a printed inner sleeve with rare photos and other memorabilia. Also included is a 60x60cm poster!

INDUSTRIAL/EXPERIMENTAL/NOISE/NEOFOLK/GOTHIC

MUSLIMGAUZE - A.P. REWORKS TWO (12"/STAALPLAAT)

Second part of the Anders Peterson reworks. Musically, this release falls in line with the more deep spiritual, meditative, abstract side of Muslimgauze, which is often overlooked. The music remains timeless, the production as crisp as ever. Limited to 300 copies. SIDE 1: 1. Citadel In Nightlight I-IV SIDE 2: 1. Tassili n'Ajjer I 2. Tassili n'Ajjer II

MUSLIMGAUZE - SADAAM'S CHILDREN (LP/STAALPLAAT)

Long-time Muslimgauze fans with keen eyes and/or photographic memories may immediately notice something about the unearthed 'Sadaam's Children' album; with some slight orthographic differences, it just about shares a name with a short track from the classic 'Narcotic' (Staalplaat, 1997); the similarity and the difference is pretty much expected from someone who both liked to reuse names and didn't care for consistency in spelling as Bryn Jones did). While none of the four lengthy tracks found on 'Sadaam's Children' actually sound like sparse, clean string sounds of 'Narcotic's 'Saddams Children', three of them never previously heard extended versions of tracks previously found on that release - well, one is both an extended and truncated version, but such are the idiosyncrasies and joys of the ever-complex Muslimgauze oeuvre. That extra-special track is the mighty, dubbed-out 'Gulf Between Us', which does appear on 'Narcotic' as a brief palate cleanser but in the same year was also released by Staalplaat as a standalone track in its ultimate, 23-minute form. That sprawling version takes a rather circuitous route as subtle electronic elements wear away at the track; the more compact 10-minute version here instead dials up the bass wobble for a track that's about as chilled as Muslimgauze ever gets. 'Believers Of The Blind Sheik' and 'Effendi' are slightly more straightforward, in that both are about twice as long as their 'Narcotic' excerpts, with the former's echoing drum hits and quiet pulse proving to be a natural fit with 'Gulf Between Us' at the beginning of the release and the even sparser, slower building version of the latter seeing the album out in slightly abstract fashion. Before that track, however, there's the previously unreleased and similarly lengthy (at nearly 17 minutes) 'Tikrit Brotherhood Quartet', the only track of the four here to get more of Jones' traditional layers of instrumentation and distortion to form a track that seems to shimmer in the summer air like a mirage. As 'Tikrit Brotherhood Quartet' winds its way from roiling static to more of Jones' classic use of hand percussion it's clear that these extended editions make for another compelling look at Jones' archives and the seemingly infinite flexibility of his muse. Limited to 700 copies.

SILK SAW - EVERYTHING'S STARTS (LP/SUB ROSA)

Since the early '90s, the Belgian duo Silk Saw has pioneered nearly unclassifiable electronic music at the forefront of experimental and avant-garde. Their 12th album is a contiguous expansion of the universe created in 'Imaginary Landscapes', the previous album published on Kotä in 2015, blending sweet and bitter in languorous and enigmatic melodies that float on intriguing pounding polyrhythms. With the release of 'Nothing is Finished' (LP title 'Everything Starts') on Sub Rosa, Marc Medea and Gabriel Séverin are back home, since their very first trial, 'Musique Du Garrot Et De La Feraille' - under their strange 'modern dada' alias, Jardin d'Usure - was released in 1994 (followed by the first two Silk Saw albums from 1996 and 1997). Now more than ever, without compromise, the duo makes full use of complex tools like Frequency Modulation, granular and morphing synthesis. In an array of delightful to jarring surprises, a sinuous ballad will be troubled with remote blasts, or abruptly interrupted by a collapse of the base. While the tracks resonate fundamentally with a feeling of falling, failing, decay, the sleeve picture conveys that destruction is in fact where everything starts. TRACKS: 1. Collapse Of The Merchant Civilization 17'21 2. Corrupted Food 16'56

VENIN CARMIN - CONSTANT DEPRESSION (LP/SEJA)

The trio Venin Carmin (Lula, Valentine and Francois) play quirky cold wave and post punk tunes that stand out mainly because the vocals are provided by the ladies, which gives a certain sensuality to the rather raw and even slightly punky compositions.

LA BREICHE - LE RITE (CD/COLD SPRING)

After their 2017 debut 'Le Mal Des Ardents' (Cold Spring), 'Le Rite' opens a new door, with post-folk sounds close to post-rock, influenced by ancient music, with folk used in a modernist way. Dark, ambient and yet mystical... deep with grandiose landscapes. The sound of La Breiche is situated at the crossroads of early music and dark ambient; ambient music, industrial music with a strong ritual dimension. Their electro-acoustic is music based on old instruments such as the hurdy-gurdy, mixed with analogue synths, field recordings, and ritual objects, taking a mystified look at nature, archaic societies, rites, beliefs and lores, animism. Presented in a stunning 6-panel digipak with artwork by Dehn Sora. For fans of Bark Psychosis, Sigur Ros, Wolves In The Throne Room, Hexvessel, Ulver, Rosa Crux.

METAL/STONER/HARDROCK

MONDO GENERATOR - COCAINE RODEO (BLACK) (LP/HEAVY PSYCH SOUNDS)

20th anniversary repress! Prior to the formation of Queens Of The Stone Age, bassist/singer Nick Oliveri recorded some originals with ex-Kyuss bandmates Josh Homme (guitar) and Brant Bjork (drums), plus Karma To Burn's Rob (drums) and others. But once recording was completed, Oliveri decided to shelve the tapes; it wasn't until several years later (well after Queens Of The Stone Age began to establish themselves) that the bassist decided to release the songs on a friend's indie label, Southern Lord Records. Going by the name Mondo Generator, 11 tracks were compiled for the 2000 release 'Cocaine Rodeo'. The majority of the songs are much more raw and hardcore/punk-based than Oliveri's output with QOTSA, as evidenced by such tracks as 'Shawnette,' 'Uncle Tommy,' 'Unless I Can Kill,' and 'I Want You To Die.'

MONDO GENERATOR - DEAD PLANET (BLACK) (LP/HEAVY PSYCH SOUNDS)

"With 'Dead Planet' Oliveri has taken a band once considered a side project and turned it into a full-fledged rock and roll powerhouse. As has been his trademark when he had written songs with Kyuss or QOTSA, this album just oozes with punk rock ethos. Combined with the stoner rock influences that he helped create, this album is a study in excess and self-indulgence. And that is exactly what makes it so damn good." ~Ed Thompson. Originally released in 2006.

NIGHTSTALKER - THE RITUAL (LP/LABYRINTH OF THOGHTS)

Second press of 300 copies on sun yellow vinyl. 'The Ritual' contains four Nightstalker songs that were recorded during the summer of '98 and '99, plus a cover of Motörhead's 'Iron Horse'. A twenty-seven minute long mixture of psychedelia, stoner and punk. Mastered anew by the band themselves, this vinyl release is accompanied by an album insert containing the lyrics to the songs, an addition which can't be found on the original CD version.

JAZZ/AVANTGARDE

KRATOCHVIL/ACKERMAN/ZANGI - LETOPIS (LP/STUDIO BUDIKOV)

SOUL/FUNK/LATIN/R&B/GOSPEL

VARIOUS - TCHIC TCHIC: FRENCH BOSSA NOVA 1963-1974 (2LP) (LP/BORN BAD)

Ever since the late 1950s bossa-nova revolution, Brazil's influence on French music has been undeniable. Pierre Barouh, Georges Moustaki and a vast array of lesser known artists, all made the Musica Popular Brasileira (MPB) an axis of promotion at the service of a cool and metaphysical, modern and mixed Brazilian lifestyle. Some were seduced by the poetic languors of the bossa, some were looking for fun, and others just loved the American hybridization of jazz-bossa, jazz-samba. With emotion, arrangements for violin and guitar, bossa nova rapidly changed. A transformation that can be heard in the Tchic, tchic, French Bossa Nova 1963-1974 compilation, the result of a cultural reappropriation, which traveled through the United States and supplemented itself in France. TRACKS: 01. Les Masques - Il Faut Tenir 02. Isabelle Aubret - Casa Forte 03. Christianne Legrand - HLM Et Cine Roman 04. Jean Constantin - Pas Tant D'chichi Ponpon 05. VOZ DI SANICOLAU - FUNDO DE MARE PALINHA (10") (10"/ANALOG AFRICA)

In 1976, seven Cabo Verdean musicians going by the name Voz di Sanicolau gathered in a small recording studio in Rotterdam where they laid down an album of fearsome coladeira songs inspired by the music of their home island of Sao Nicolau. The album took only a few days to record, which may explain the unexpected urgency that fires each track. Treble-soaked electric guitar lines snake back and forth through percussion-and-cavaquinho driven rhythms rooted in the sound of the islands established by the previous generation of Cabo Verdean émigrés; subtle keyboards wash through the background, and the vocals, traded between Joana do Rosario and Tô-Zé, alternately push the music forward and soar above it. The resulting album is both deeply felt and fiercely executed, and in its grooves one hears the sound of some of the finest Cabo Verdean musicians of their era locked in complete unity of purpose. It should have been the beginning of something extraordinary; but the pressures of making ends meet forced the musicians back to their day jobs, and Voz di Sanicolau vanished as quickly as they had appeared, leaving their lone album, 'Fundo De Marê Palinha', as sole proof of their existence. Forty-four years later the album sounds as fresh as it did the day it was recorded. It is unknown if Dutch sound engineer Frans Rolland, who oversaw the recordings, knew he was helping to make history: during these sessions, Joana do Rosario, whose majestic vocals were crucial to the sound of Voz di Sanicolau, became the first Cabo Verdean woman ever to appear on a long playing record.

TAYLOR, BROTHER THEOTIS - BROTHER THEOTIS TAYLOR (LP/MISSISSIPPI)

Brother Theotis Taylor is a 92-year-old spiritual singer and piano player known throughout South Georgia and beyond for his powerful voice and heavenly falsetto. His music took him from his home in Fitzgerald, Georgia, to the stage with Sam Cooke and the Soul Stirrers, to Harlem's Apollo, and even to Carnegie Hall. Though his releases are limited to six stunning and rare singles on the Pitch label and a single small-press LP, his recorded archive is vast. For much of his life, Brother Taylor kept a reel-to-reel recorder atop his piano at home. Brother Taylor recorded himself on this DIY home setup only when he was inspired by a higher power, often fasting and praying for days before recording. These intimate home recordings were digitized in 2020 and are being heard for the first time with this release. Revisiting these old songs brought Brother Taylor to tears. "[When I hear this music] I pick up the same spirit that I did it in. And you see me cryin'. It made me feel good 'cause I know I did it and I did it well. And I want to see it get out, because if it made me feel good, it make somebody else feel good. Right? This is spiritual music." 12" black vinyl LP with gold-foil embossed jacket, and 8-page full sized booklet with extensive liner notes and photographs courtesy of Brother Taylor and his family.

MANSOUR, MOHAMED - SWEET DREAMS (7"/STAALPLAAT)

Janet Erskine Stuart said that "Egypt was full of dreams, mysteries, memories". Her music, like her architecture is somehow hardwired into us, more than we know. When Oum Kalthoum was at her zenith, Egyptian music circled the world on shortwave, picked up and marvelled over by millions who didn't understand a word she sang but understood the emotion in it. Something different might be said about an astonishing single by Mohamed Mansour, now issued by Staalplaat as a limited edition 7" single. Many will know the words on the first side, because they come from the Eurythmics song 'Sweet Dreams Are Made Of This', its glorious, operatic line translated into Arabic as 'Ahlamna El Helwa'. When the Lebanese singer Mayssa Karaa re-recorded Jefferson Airplane's 'White Rabbit' in Arabic for the 'American Hustle' soundtrack, many were reminded that the sheer beauty of the original song went beyond limitations of language. So it is with Mansour's version of the Dave Stewart and Annie Lennox classic, a soaring line over a universal beat. To make the single doubly special, the flipside is Mansour's reworking of Woody Guthrie's 'All You Fascists Bound To Lose', a song that had resonance when it was first performed but which seems ever more relevant today. Mansour's version is called 'Hatehhsare', but its message remains the same: evil never prevails for long. Mansour's music is a compelling synthesis of European, American and Egyptians styles and sounds. It is genuinely international. Just as shortwave radio fans used to twiddle dials to find Oum Kalthoum phasing up and down in the ether, so Mansour's music has a global presence on the internet, but how fine to have it in physical form too, in a beautifully designed sleeve by Staalplaat. Mo is a lyricist, vocalist and physicist from Egypt, Scotland and Kuwait, who has never worked on the 1st of May. Limited to 300 copies.
