Formed in 2009 by four inner-space travellers from western Finland, Kairon; IRSE! is a rare bird, near-impossible to classify. The Wire describes their music as a "viperous cocktail of space rock, Greg Lake-era King Crimson and free jazz", and ever since their debut album, 'Ujubasajuba' set Bandcamp buzzing in 2014, their records have been hidden classics of modern psych-rock for those in the know. Their third album 'Polysomn' is a treasure-trove of glitching, elated sounds, that takes psychedelia into a new dimension. 'Polysomn' brings to mind the melodic lightning of bands like Dungen, the chainsawing alternative guitar fuzz of My Bloody Valentine, the sparkle and dreamscape of Slowdive, and the technological envelope-pushing of Radiohead's outsider works.

Somewhere between cosmic space rock and progressive psychedelia are Polymoon, a band from Tampere, Finland. The basic elements of Polymoon are endless sonic reflections in the night sky, crushing fuzz guitars and undulating synthesizers. The backbone of the entity is a symbiosis of complex drum sequences and pulsating bass guitar. In the music of Polymoon, euphoria and melancholia converge to guide the listener to another level of being to embrace the monolith of psychedelia. Polymoon is an ensemble of the end times, a formless entity behind the clandestine curtain.

The first official reissue - or in most cases, re-release of any kind - of these Cambodian rock recordings since their initial release as singles. Comes with an 8-page full color booklet with info and photos supplied by Sinn Sisamouth's surviving family. There were no deluxe studios for the musicians who recorded the devastating tracks contained herein. Nothing so grand. Most of these tracks were recorded live, with traditional instruments finding a place alongside any keyboards or guitars that could be found. And yet, it was the experiments of Khmer rock musicians which transformed the nightlife of the Cambodian capital, Phnom Penh - and which many years later continue to seduce listeners around the world with their groovy sound. The music is wild and anarchic, rhythmic and undulating, or sweet and lyrical, but always moving and with that deep soulfulness, regardless of actual musical genre or style, that is the hallmark of the best and most important music. The lyrics often tell stories of angst, death, betrayal and sorrow. But there is a very real, deep, inescapable tragedy in these grooves as well. Alas, in 1975 came an entirely different type of transformation: the rise to power in Cambodia of the fanatical, anti-Western Khmer Rouge, led by Pol Pot. Within roughly four years, implementing their "concept of Year Zero," Pot and his regime were responsible for the deaths of an estimated two million Cambodians (roughly 21% of the nation's population), many in the notorious "killing fields." Even the most famous and beloved Khmer musicians could not escape. Sinn Sisamouth, the "King of Khmer music"; Ros Sereysothea, the "Golden Voice of the Royal Capital"; and Pan Ron - all featured on this collection of songs written by the majestic Sinn Sisamouth - met their deaths at the hands of the Khmer Rouge. Jon Swain, who was the Sunday Times war correspondent in South Vietnam and Cambodia at the time, said: "Educated people, musicians, people with glasses... a lot were taken to the killing fields... so the great singers disappeared." To us, the richness and deep soulfulness of Cambodian music is akin perhaps to what was excavated from Ethiopia and embraced worldwide over the years thanks to the 'Ethiopiques' series - this despite the geographical and cultural distance between the two very different nations. It really is one world, not three. SIDE 1: 1. Rom A Go-Go (A Go Go Dance) 2:55 Sinn Sisamouth 2. Hala Hala 2:54 Sinn Sisamouth 3. The fifth release in the series of classic mod reissues. the Amber Squad released this 7" in 1980. Three tracks, including 'Teel You A Lie' and 'Six Of Me'. For fans of Dr. Feelgood and Eddie & The Hotrods.

With an LP released on Spazz Records (NL), the musical duo now delivers something oriental. Still bringing strong musical influences of the instrumental '60s (The Shadows, The Ventures, Link Wray), taken into an oriental future in a brilliant way.

With the Jiggerz' second single, shortly released after their debut 7" 'Time To Get Out' on Folc Records, they bring two 1970s punk rock hits.

Messer Chups are something of an institution these days, leading the way in the instro/surf scene they have dominated the sound for the last few years with their unique blend of reverb laden surf and tremolo heavy riffs lifted from classic rockabilly. These 15 tracks were remastered and mixed by Oleg (Guitaracula) over the 2019/2020 winter in St. Petersburg. Long after the sold out album 'Voice Of Zombierella' you're treated once more to the dulcet tones of Svetlana singing on a couple of these tracks too. Fabulous artwork by the very talented Sol Rac leave no doubts as to the content and you can be sure that it won't stay in the racks for very long either. Limited to just 500 copies.

Another classic album rescued from the trashcan of oblivion. Recorded almost 20 years ago, these 13 tracks are now released for the first time ever. Heavily influenced by the early releases of The Monsters (from Switzerland) this is a gnarly album of snotty, hard hitting garage punk that leaves the revival bands far, far behind. Titch's (ex-The Klingonz) vocals come across somewhere between Lemmy and Beatman, the guitars produce a wall of sound that's pretty much relentless and the drummer could have easily have absconded from Ministry or The Revolting Cocks... Artwork by up and coming graphic artist K-Rat (Gilles Dechamps) and mastered for vinyl by Doyley at Diablo studios. A fantastic slice of garage/trash history not to be missed.

Since 1993 the 'Diggin' For Gold' series has unearthed obscure '60s beat/garage/pop nuggets from around the world. Lovingly curated by master collectors extraordinaire, remastered from the best sources and packaged with informative liner notes and pictures. Busy Bee are proud to help put out the 11th installment in the series, jam-packed with delights you've never heard of. After two volumes of only US bands this one goes back to the initial formula -45's from all around the world- and once again lets you explore great sixties punk and pop from Africa, Asia, America and Europe. Unfortunately no tracks from Antarctica. Maybe on vol 12, right? Limited edition of 500 copies, vinyl only. Grab it while you can! SIDE 1: 1. DICKIE LOADER & BLUE JEANS - I Hate Getting Up In The Morning (South Africa) 2. MOON SPINNERS - Soul On Fire (Norway) 3. LEX RELAX - Quatre-Vingt Cavalliers (Switzerland) 4. PRINCE OF ISRAEL - Try To Understand (Israel) 5. BOYS - Walk Back To Me (Singapore) 6. KANO Y LOS BULLDOGS - Todo Quedo Atras (Uruguay) 7. LIGHT STONES - Mary-Ann (Liechtenstein) 8. LES VIPERES - Please Go Away (Belgium) SIDE 2: 1. MENACE - You Don't Even Wink Your Eye (Hong Kong) 2. MAVI ISIKLAR - Ain't That So (Turkey) 3. TEENAGERS - I Can Hear Them Play (Sweden) 4. JUDGE WAYNE & THE CONVICTS - I'm Crying (United Kingdom)

The High Span is a project based in Rochester, Kent and features three experienced, yet amazingly unjaded, musical souls in Kevin Younger (of Armitage Shanks, Ye Ascoyne d'Ascoynes, Subway Sect, Baby Birkin, The Speed Of Sound and others), Mark Aitken (of Ye Ascoyne d'Ascoynes, Bob Collins & The Full Nelson, These Guilty Men and others) and Jimmy Moore (of revered Canadian alt-rockers Rusty, One Free Fall and others). The High Span's special blend is one of DIY post-pop jangle and edgier experimental sounds, of uncynical guitar-pop and suburban English awkwardness. It's a peculiar taste, but one worth acquiring. The first release as The High Span, this four-track EP fires up with the tots TV tragedy of 'Hamble' on Side A, moving gracefully into 'Nee Naw', a live favourite. Side B kicks off with 'Got It Getting It', with the spikier 'Dynamik 73' following on. It's quite a squad.

The Treasures Of Mexico are a collection of long-time Medway musicians, including Mark Matthews and Bob Collins, both ex-members of UK indie legends The Dentists (and many more since), with Russ Baxter on drums previously The Discords and Phaze and currently the same for Secret Affair, and Nick Rice on bass, the same for Groovy Uncle too. Additional vocals are provided by Jetstream Pony's Beth Arzy. Since the demise of The Dentists in the late '90s, Mark and Bob, key contributors and founder members, have been busy through a number of side projects and contributions to worthy musical causes, both together and separately, and most recently contributing with The Treasures Of Mexico. With Mark on song-writing duties, in 2018 they released their second album 'Everything Sparks Joy' on Shelflife Records to much acclaim, hitting many Best Album Charts at the end of that year. The following year, 'The Last Thing', an album track, was released as a single on Spinout Nuggets, with two previously unreleased tracks. Limited to 300 hand-numbered copies, this 7" release is doubled-up, with 'Heart Shaped Clock' on the Blue Side and 'Stick With You' on the Bright Side. With the long musical journey to this day (including The Dentists, Coax, Fortress Madonna, Words Beginning With X, The Great Lines, Echo Heights), it's not about the journey itself, it's about what comes through those speakers, and into your lives, no matter how it got there.

Do you love a good tune, something so catchy you can't help but grin from ear to ear? Then raise three cheers for The Veras, four fellas making music with just that reaction in mind. Inspired by all the great music from the '50s right up to about 5 minutes ago, especially glam rock, punk, new wave, '90s indie and Britpop, The Veras are bringing back the buzz of going to see your favourite band live. These four fellas have been gracing musical stages together in another project for over a decade, but now's the time for The Veras! This is the sound of the future, with the past and the present in mind!

Astaron from Vienna Austria were a music and art performance duo made up of Angie Mörth (member of viele bunte Autos) and Martina Aichhorn which existed from 1984 to 1989. Influenced by the Viennese Actionism, Einstürzende Neubauten and Kate Bush and armed with a big dose of black humour and a true love for trash culture they created an impressively unique body of work. They released two DIY tapes, one 12" and this stunning self titled album at the tail end of 1987. It was originally released by local label Ton Um Ton Records in a criminally low pressing of 500 copies. It's an unadjusted highly experimental and totally addictive dark wave album with hints of minimal post punk. The music ranges from dirge-like chants to ethereal pop to haunting ballads. It's pure melancholic beauty from start to finish. Think KUKL, Cocteau Twins, Young Marble Giants for the minimal sound, Brian Eno, Lizzy Mercier Descloux and Diamanda Galas. Sealed Records are proud to give this Haunting rhythmic and gorgeous album a new lease of life. This time adding a printed inner sleeve and 12 page booklet.

Formed in 2007, Joensuu 1685 is an alternative rock band based in Helsinki, Finland. The band consists of brothers Markus Joensuu (drums) and Mikko Joensuu (vocals, guitar, Farfisa) and Risto Joensuu (bass), who is not related but shares the same surname. 'ÖB' is their second album.

Reissue of the solo debut-album by Henrik Palm of In Solitude, Pig Eyes, Södra Sverige et al. This is dark and gloomy stuff, influenced by the likes of Swans, Killing Joke and Crass. There are guest appearances from Sara Taylor (of Youth Code) and Anna Norberg.

Sophomore album from eclectic Swedish multi-instrumentalist Henrik Palm (In Solitude, Ghost, Pig Eyes, Gösta Berlings Saga, Södra Sverige). A rare explosion of outlandish and captivating songs, Voivodian riffs, prog excursions and heavy-pop sonic contortions. For fans of everything from Killing Joke, Crass, Psychic TV, Trouble, Celtic Frost and My Bloody Valentine. "Raw rock and roll with a punk edge and a profound sense of weirdness." ~Decibel.

Reissue of sixth album from 2001 by Finnish rock band Tehosekoitin.

Reissue of fifth album from 2000 by Finnish rock band Tehosekoitin.

Twelve tracks, sung in English and French. Comes in jewelcase.

First time on vinyl and with new Nick Blinko artwork. This track was originally only available as a one track CD single with the purchase of 'The Haunted Head' book by Nick Blinko which came out in November 2009. The then newly-recorded and previously unreleased Rudimentary Peni song 'Wilfred Owen The Chances' is a three and a half minute dark and disturbing dirge. The lyrics were originally written by Wilfred Edward Salter Owen (1893-1918) about the fortune of five British 'Tommies' during World War I.

The Drones were a Manchester based punk band. They formed in 1975 and were there in the early days of punk! They later relocated to London and became one of the pioneering punk bands along with The Vibrators, X-Ray Spex, Chelsea and The Stranglers. In December 1977, The Drones released their debut album produced by Simon Humphrey. The very underrated 'Further Temptations' is definitely one of the top notch punk classics!

Formed in 1979 in new town Harlow, The Newtown Neurotics are one of the most underrated yet essential punk bands. 'Kick Out!' is a 15-track round up of their first six singles taking in the years 1979 to 1984. The first two singles 'Hypocrite' and 'When The Oil Runs Out' were melodic nuggets released on their own No Wonder label. Both of these singles were written prior to the election of the Thatcher monster. The horror of this event changed what was the non-political writing style of Steve's lyrics into the other extreme, and so in June 1982 'Kick Out The Tories' was released on CNT records. Sadly 38 years later, the lyrics are most poignant and needed than ever. The band continued releasing single after single from the painfully personal to the politically pertinent, all done with intelligence and style. Also included is 'Andy Is A Corporatist/Mindless Version' taken from the 'Son Of Oi!' compilation. The album comes with a 32 page booklet of archive - photos, reviews, interviews and more and was conceived to be released alongside the documentary of the same name about the band's history.

Guilty is The Vibrators' third album. It was originally released in 1982, after two major-label albums. The band is one of the punk founding fathers (they formed in 1976) and they are one of the most influential. (they had their song covered by The Exploited, UK Subs, GBH, REM, Die Toten Hosen... to name a few). With a career lasting forty four years, The Vibrators are still touring to this date!

Low-key synth and keyboard studio album by Swedish all-rounder Gustaf Dicksson. Limited edition of 300 copies with insert. From the early days of the found-sounds recordings (like the downright scary 'Unga Röster' album and the hilarious 'Mandys Bil' 7"), the homespun kitchen recordings/tape collages of the still-going 'Idiotmusik' series to the more carefully elaborated and precise 'Leendet Från Helvetet' and 'Knutna Nävar' albums, the massive 'Livets Ord' dropped like a bomb when it originally surfaced as a self-released cassette in 2018. Heavily based on synths and keyboards and clocking in on no less than close 70 minutes over 4 LP-sides, this is arguably THE epic album from the cluster around the Förlag För Fri Musik empire. Gustaf Dickssons' fascination for christianity/religious assemblies shines through once again, the title 'Livets Ord' ('The Word Of Life') derived from the Swedish free church/sect with the same name that was based in Uppsala between 1983-2013 and casting a pastoral shadow over the ambient music of the album. While dabbling with a long tradition of kosmische musik and private-pressed new age wonders, Blod's now patented sound of a Björn Isfält-gone-sour still lingers throughout the entire recording. A cornerstone in contemporary Gothenburg underground music. Featuring guest appearances by Emelie Thulin and Jerker Jarold.

Wonderful lo-fi synthpop/collage LP by Marseillaise duo Jean-Marie Mercimek. Limited edition of 250 copies with insert. Something has been brewing in France in recent years. Underground record shops, small venues, micro labels and young musicians are creating a new vibe in various parts of the country. A broad range of styles and genres get randomly mixed into a melting pot with refreshing results. Jean Marie-Mercimek is one of those projects coming out of this new scene. The duo of Marion Molle and Ronan Riou revisits French lo-fi synth pop in a fairytale-like way, utilising their collection of rare automatic casio keyboards, frequency modulation chanson and tape collages towards a multilayered comic book journey in form of a concert. As if there was an animated wax brush painted cartoon version of Elli and Jacno!

The song 'Ride The Final Tide' shows a more aggressive side to this Norwegian band and did not fit the album they are currently working on. The EP also includes a cover of Manes, 'Maanens Natt'.

'Anamneses' is an album filled with memories and recollections that were gathered over a period of 25 years since the band's formation. It showcases an exclusive track, the first one since the release of the sophomore album 'Gods Of War - At War' in 2015, an epic long journey in search of the Sirens and the pursuit of a mean to "forget" and move forward. The track 'Anamneses From The Past (Sirens Calling)' essentially links Macabre Omen's Past with the Present and the Future and has managed along the way to capture the Sirens' Voices in their entirety for the first time ever. To compliment this cathartic journey we decided to add as bonus all the old mid '90s material, remastered from original sources and where possible also remixed.

Forged in the early 2000s, Mare has become quite the mysterious gem for underground fanatics across the globe. Rarely playing live and with hard to get releases, the band has become, for many, one of the few 'real' black metal bands out there left in today's oversaturated scene. To many they have seemed to do so on purpose, but for us working closely with the band it is simply in their nature not to bother. They make music for themselves, they do this for themselves, and rest assured Mare will genuinely keep going down their own path never caring about hypes, fashion, trends or fame. They arrogantly named their own music 'Nidrosian Black Sorcerous Art' which defines who they are, on stage and off stage. This isn't a show, this isn't a gimmick. This is real black metal how it always was meant to be. Behold Mare's 'Ebony Tower'!

A remaster of the two EPs 'Spheres Like Death' and 'Throne Of The Thirteenth Witch'. 'Spheres Like Death' was recorded winter 09/10 e.v at Brekstad, except 'Offerlam' recorded autumn 06 e.v in Red Cave. Mixed and mastered by Kristoffer Vansvik. Witch chant on 'Nidrosian Moon' Sabbat by Malefica. 'Throne Of The Thirteenth Witch' was recorded under the December fullmoon 06 e.v. Remixed and remastered by Kristoffer Vansvik.

Núll, also known as 0, was formed in Reykjavík, Iceland in 2012. The band features members of notorious black metal acts such as Misthyrming, Nadra, Carpe Noctem. Their debut album 'Null & Void' was released by Vánagandr and Pest Productions in 2014 and got noticed for its cleaver melodies, eerie nihilist doom metal and creative vocals. Null means nothing. In celebration of all things hollow and void, howling psalms of naught into the endless emptiness. Whereas 'Null & Void' revolved around nothingness, Entity focuses on futility and obsolescence. Everything is nothing. Nothing is everything.

'Judgement' is the second album from this sadly underrated band. Although the Negative Plane vibe surely is present, for obvious reasons, the band offers something even more ghastly, reminiscent of early Mortuary Drape and the classic early Rotting Christ-era, to mention some influences.

As the name suggests, this is as sinister and ominous black metal can get, calculated and intricate yet raw and unpleasant at the same time. An underrated and overlooked album released back in 2014 by Funeral Industries. Highly recommended to fans of Negative Plane, Mortuary Drape and old era Rotting Christ.

Where Old World superstition meets the cold, gray reality of life in the former Soviet Bloc, there is "Romanian ice metal". Conceived in rural Transylvania by a heavy metal enthusiast named Vladislav Bârladeanu, Persekutor follow in the great tradition of early rock-based black metal masters like Venom, Celtic Frost and Bathory, channeled through the vicious, unflinching efficiency of AC/DC. In 2018, Vlad moved to Hollywood and recruited members of prominent underground musical entities to fulfill his purpose. In 2019, Persekutor entered Veracuda Studios in El Sereno to record their first proper full-length. The sessions were helmed by engineer extraordinaire Phil Vera, who also happens to be the guitarist for powerviolence legends Crom and Despise You - not to mention noted ale enthusiasts Trappist. The result is 'Permanent Winter', nine songs inspired by Carpathian survivalist tales, Transylvanian booze fighters and the ever-present threat of freezing to death. It is the uncompromising spirit of Eastern European black metal mainlined into the collapsed vein of greasy rock'n'roll.

Special extended LP edition of Pilgrim's cult 'Misery Wizard' album from 2012, dedicated to the memory of Jon Rossi. Includes two extra bonus tracks, 'Return Of Astaroth' and 'Gryphon Rider', from the band's unfinished third album. This legendary doom classic is pressed on three sides of vinyl for extra heavy fidelity and crushing sound, with bonus tracks on 4th side. Exclusive new liner notes provided by Albert Witchfinder (Reverend Bizarre) and Eric Heath-Dittrich (Pilgrim) offer deeper insight into the album and Pilgrim's legacy.

Second album by this German atmospheric black metal band. Limited to 315 handnumbered copies.

Torture Killer's infamous 'Swarm!' album from 2006, a stone-cold Chris Barnes (vocalist from Cannibal Corpse/Six Feet Under) rot'n'roll classic, available on vinyl for the very first time! This is groove-laden, brutal death metal.

Jewel case containing eleven tracks plus five bonus tracks.

Unique improv/ambient album by two creative minds Lol Coxhill and Morgan Fisher. Originally from 1981 and now reissued for the first time on vinyl on transparent green and black vinyl. Cherry Red generously gave Morgan Fisher musical carte-blanche by offering to distribute a label of his own so, like his studio, he called his label Pipe. For the first album he decided to record an album of ambient music. Rather than using synths, Morgan decided to invite soprano sax supremo Lol Coxhill to supply some raw material which he then processed in various ways. The opening track is based on Lol's beautiful performance of Handel's 'Largo', recycled through tape delays, VCS3 filters and octave shifts. The result (in Morgan's opinion) is somewhat like a Mexican funeral march. Other tracks transform the sound of the sax sound into bells (!) and lush orchestral soundscapes. The 20-minute title track is based on the melody of the short closing track (which Lol sang, accompanied by church bells!). Morgan recorded phrases from the melody using piano, guitar, bass and voice. He snipped off the beginning of each note (about 5mm of tape) making the sounds less recognisable, then looped each phrase and recorded long stretches of the loops onto individual tracks of his 8-track TEAC. Finally he created this piece in real time by fading tracks in and out through long tape delays. This pioneering work took weeks of intense experimenting and has been cited as an influence by several top Japanese artists such as Haruomi Hosono of YMO.

The original soundtrack to the supernatural thriller series 'Requiem'. Debuted by BBC One in the UK and Netflix globally, psychological horror series 'Requiem' became an instant hit, not least because of its haunting, spine-tingling score. Conjured by award-winning composers Dominik Scherrer ('The Missing', 'Ripper Street', 'Marple'), and Natasha Khan of Bat For Lashes, 'Requiem' is an eerie landscape of sharp, scraping cello, soothing harps and tense string sections.

Over the last two decades, 20syl has crafted a unique, hip-hop infused, electro musical universe. He inherited a rich musical knowledge of analog and vintage sounds form years of classic beat creating. The prolific producer has taken his trademark overseas with remixes of ScHoolboy Q, Rihanna, and King Krule - setting up a booming environment for the release of his anticipated first solo EP, 'Motifs'.

Reprint of this classic hip-hop/beats EP by 20Syl.

Mohamed M. Kooshin was one of a rarified group in Somali music, a master of the kaban who followed in the footsteps of the legendary players of the kaban such as Qarshe, Hudeydi, and Omar Dhuule. Kooshin was the youngest member of Somalia's esteemed national music group Waaberi before leaving Somalia in the early 1990s and moving to Toronto, Canada. In Canada Kooshin produced a string of releases for Waberi Studio and Arts, collaborating with Sahro Ahmed , writing and recording out of his home studio. Kooshin passed away on December 27th 2018 leaving behind a legacy of beautiful music and loving fans across the global Somali diaspora. Kooshin played the kaban which has a special place in Somali music. It was a foreign instrument that, upon its arrival to Somalia in the 1940s, became the centre of the immensely popular style of music known as qaraami. For many Somali music fans the sound of qaraami - poetic lyrics accompanied by the sparse sounds of the kaban and bongo drums - is the quintessential Somali sound. A joint release with Wait And See from Toronto, Canada and the first in a series of Somali recordings from Toronto.

2020 album from New Orleans' legendary 79rs Gang! 79rs Gang originally formed in 2013 when Big Chief Romeo Bougere of the 9th Ward Hunters and Big Chief Jermaine Bossier of the 7th Ward Creole Hunters put their differences aside and came together to build a bridge with music, releasing a traditional Mardi Gras Indian music album ('Fire On The Bayou') in 2014. Today, Jermaine and Romeo - working alongside writer/ producer Eric Heigle (Arcade Fire, The Soul Rebels, Lost Bayou Ramblers) - have created an album that is rooted in the unique traditions of New Orleans Mardi Gras Indian culture, while launching that culture forward, bringing each track to dance floors and block parties around the world. Additional collaborators on 'Expect The Unexpected' include Arcade Fire's Win Butler, LCD Soundsystem's Korey Richey, Grammy Award winning trumpeter Nicholas Payton, Haitian music collective Lakou Mizik and many more notable musicians.

Rüstem Quliyev was born in 1969 in the village of Kosalar, Nagorno Karabakh. At the age of seven he had already mastered the tar before moving on to play the saz. He first encountered the guitar whilst doing his military service for the USSR in Russia and quickly made a name for himself as a guitarist after returning to Azerbaijan. During the early 1990s, after years of intense fighting, he had to flee his home due to the conflict in Nagorno Karabakh and settled in the capital city Baku where his guitar playing took on a new character. Here he played at weddings, made TV appearances and recorded numerous cassettes with small labels in the city. Rüstem's guitar playing not only drew on the rich traditional music of Azerbaijan but his thirst and passion for music also meant that he incorporated styles from across the globe into his repertoire- from Bollywood disco tunes and Afghan pop songs to Iranian street melodies and Spanish flamenco. He crafted a unique sound within an already idiosyncratic subculture of Azerbaijani electric guitar music. Sadly his career was brought to a sudden end in 2005 after a short battle with lung cancer. His music, however, lives on remaining popular throughout the country. This album of archival recordings, produced in collaboration with Rüstem Quliyev's family, marks the first international release of this guitar legend's music. Since the late 1960s the guitar has been adopted and transformed by musicians across the Caucasus. Inspired by traditional genres, such as the courtly mugham and the songs and tunes of ashiq bards, guitarists have developed a unique sound, new techniques and styles of playing. 'Gitara' traces the development of this musical subculture, following the lives of guitarists from the suburbs of Azerbaijan's capital Baku to the rural villages of Borcali (Kvemo Kartli) in Georgia.
