Limited to 500 copies LP + bonus 'Imperial Bastard 7" package. This release sees 2 of Sourvein's titles being released on vinyl for the first time. "Black Fang" marks the third full length for North Carolina's Sourvein who have otherwise released a few EP's and Splits. Sourvein plays down-tuned groove oriented doom/sludge that hits like a bong and never sobers up. The band having survived multiple lineup changes since the inception in 1993 shows no signs of letting up with "Fang" as a great follow up to 2002s "Will to Mangle". Many will have to reconsider which is the bands best release once Black Fang leaves its mark. The record opens up with the title track, and hits you with a repetitive groove riff I found reminiscent of recent Electric Wizard sans the psycadelia. Interesting enough, the guitar player who is now absent, Liz Buckingham, left Sourvein to join Electric Wizard years ago. At the middle mark of "Night Eyes" they break down into this really cool riff that invokes some sort of mind control. You have two choices: take drugs, or murder someone. "Nomadic" is another track that sticks out. A bit more driving, Nomadic sludges forward with some great groove and eventually hits with the first solo of the record, and it fucking kills. I was actually done talking about the songs and finishing up the end of my review and I had to come back and talk about "Nocturnal/Negative Phaze". It may be the best track on the record even though it took me a few listens to notice. Clocking it at 6:37, the track is a long progression combining elements found throughout the rest of the record. Nocturnal/Negative Phase does a great job of showing off their creativity. If this where my project, I'd take this track and use it as the ground-work for future writing inspiration.
