Ghanaian musician K. Frimpong recorded with two different
bands in the 1970s: Vis-A-Vis and Cubano Fiestas. 'Kyenkyen Bi Adi M'awu' fuses heavy afrobeat drums and horns with highlife
guitar lines and is his most well known track. It was taken from the legendary 'K. Frimpong & His Cubano Fiestas' LP, released in 1977 on Continental Records out of Ghana. Ebo Taylor's track 'Heaven' is taken from Ebo's excellent self titled LP, originally released on Esibons in 1977.

BUTLER, BILLY -& INFINITY-/LADY LEE - WHATEVER'S FAIR/SIMPLE THINGS

'Whatever's Fair' is a storming Northern Soul cut of the highest order, with a very catchy chorus hook, surprisingly not very well known it seems. Taken from Billy Butler & Infinity's 'Hung Up On You' LP from 1973. 'Simple Things' is an awesome midtempo soul/rare groove ... read more »

ADOLFO, ANTONIO -E A BRAZUCA-/MARIA CASTRO NEVES & SAMBA S.A. - DOIS MINUTOS DE UMA NOVO DIA/CANDOMBLE

Antonio Adolfo E A Brazuca's 'Dois Minutos De Um Novo Dia' is a pacey samba-funk-MPB track that originally appeared on a 7-inch from 1969, released by Odeon Brazil. Expect soaring vocals, strings and horns over alternating full and half-time funk drum breaks. Very big ... read more »

CORTES, LULA -& LAILSON- - SATWA

Written, recorded and released just as Brazil's military dictatorship reached the climax of its long black arc, the one and only album by Satwa is a divinely subtle protest, often cited as Brazil's first independent record. A real lost masterpiece from any angle, and the ... read more »

FATHILI & THE YAHOOS/THE WINGS - MABALA, PART 1/GONE WITH THE SUN

Active during the '70s, Fathili & The Yahoos came from Kenya. Their track on this split is soulful but raw, mid-tempo Afro-funk. These Wings had little to do with Sir Paul McCartney. No, this band hailed from Nigeria, specializing in bluesy disco, funk and soul moods ... read more »

CRAVO & CANELA - PRECO DA CADA UM

CRAVO & CANELA - PRECO DA CADA UM

One of the rarer and more mysterious Brazilian albums and one of the best examples of MPB in the mid-to-late '70s. More samba than bossa, this record has sophisticated phrasing that you might expect in some of the EMI/Odeon work from earlier in the decade. Cravo & ... read more »
