After William Blake and Jim Thompson, 'Shadow Of A Rose' is now inspired by the work of Selby Jr, that genius of American literature mystified by his 'Last Exit To Brooklyn' and 'Requiem For A Dream.' There is an aesthetic and an elegance in the darkness, but how could the everyday give birth to naive fables? Despite the obvious differences in period and style, all these authors share a quality: that of making the voice of the forgotten, the little people, the despised, their own, of making it at least heard, if not powerful and poetic.
